I gotta ask all my former professors: why does it work so well with this movie then?

It depends on how and when you do it, samoanjoes. Zooming in on a casual scene ruins the delivery of a movie, but reinforces the strength of an intense moment. Also, the speed needs to be carefully controlled, and you must know the right way to stop.
