Two parts scared the hell out of me as a kid

1) The ghosts flying through the air during Marley's first appearance

2) When the Ghost of Christmas future reveals himself as a skeleton

Now, as an adult, they just seem sort of cheesy, but I remember being terrified as a child! Anyone else have that problem?

I did too! I first saw it when I was 8 and just saw it again now as an adult. The ghosts and skeleton did scare me silly then too. Now they just seem kind of silly. Also hated the film as a kid (what young kid likes long elaborate musicals?) but enjoy it more now. "Thank You Very Much" is a great number if you totally ignore that the guy singing it is dancing on a coffin! Pretty bizarre for a G rated film.

The skeleton ghost did in fact scare me as well……channel 11 wpix used to show a commercial for scrooge and the clips of Albert Finney were creepy. Two were when he says "humbug" and stares into the camera, the other was when he sings "I hate people, he does look into the camera at that point also……..Albert Finney was scary looking as Scrooge.

I just finished watching this so I don't have any opinion if it scared me as a kid, but I can see why Marley's first appearance would seem scary.

My Mom took me to see at the theater as a kid and yes the Ghost during Marley's initial visit scared the Sh*t out of me

Oh GOOD!,my dog found the chainsaw

Been a while since I saw this. But I seem to remember being a bit creeped out by the ghost driving by on the horse carriage and saying "Merry Christmas, Guvnuh. Merry Christmas."

"The storm cannot be stopped, but it can be survived.'"

....a ghost that is mentioned by Dickens but rarely seen in any of the other adaptations and, as you say, very spooky.

Actually, I think the ghosts in the air still kinda hold up. Those are creepy masks.

I'm with a couple of the other posters, the ghost on the hearse was what I considered the creepiest part of this movie. The flying ghosts...I guess I'd seen similar things in other horror movies so it didn't really scare as much as entertain me. I did see this movie when I was 11 or so though. What DID scare me was a version made in 1984 starring George C. Scott. When Marley unties the bandage holding his jaw shut and his mouth flops open, it was pretty unsettling to my 5yr old mind. But the WORST was when The Ghost of Christmas Present opened his robes to reveal Ignorance and Want. I'll shorten the dialogue but this scene gave me the creeps as a kid and I was sure those dirty faces were waiting for me upstairs under my bed.

Ghost of Christmas Present: They are your children! They are the children of all who walk the earth unseen! Their names are Ignorance and Want! Beware of them, for upon their brow is written the word "doom"! They spell the downfall of you and all who deny their existence!

Ebenezer Scrooge: Have they no refuge, no resource?

Ghost of Christmas Present: [grins, mocking him from an earlier conversation] "Are there no workhouses? Are there no prisons?"

Ebenezer Scrooge: [looks down at the children] Cover them. I do not wish to see them.

Ghost of Christmas Present: I thought as much.

[Present closes his robe to conceal the children]

Ghost of Christmas Present: They are hidden... but they live... oh, they live...

Yes,Dickens does that scene better in my opinion but Woodward is good I agree.

Anyone watch this on Television in the 1980s and early 90s? The commercial breaks- a still and an eerie sound effect- freaked me out as a kid.
Yes, the skull of Yet-to-Come was also a scary scene, and this was after watching Scrooge hanging over the coffin from hell in MICKEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL. Both films made me wary about seeing the Ghost in other adaptations.

I remember those weird commercial break bumpers!

reply

I have been looking for that sound effect they played between commercial breaks but can't. It was an eerie bell sound.

The skeleton.

This is cut from the Blu-ray & according Wikipedia was NEVER in the 1970 version, but I saw this in the theater when it was originally released & it was etched in my memory. I was so disappointed I looked for this version for decades just for that scene & its gone.:-/

LOL me too, my grandparents took my sister and I to see it in the theaters when I was 6, and those parts scared the crap out of me..
