TV fans actually LIKE this?!!

I've seen endless bitching, pissing and moaning about Burton's film, and I'm the first to admit that Burton took a lot of missteps, but I liked that film enough to prod me to finally go back and watch the original series. It was frustrating how they'd drag stories out to the point of tedium on a day-to-day basis, but overall it's a great show with loveable characters. So I finally got around to watching House of Dark Shadows... and wow, is it NOT the same thing! I could see how "House of" could've gotten someone into the TV show, but not the other way around.

The story was too drawn-out on TV, but it's too condensed here - and it frequently feels like footage was chopped out. The characters are all cardboard imitations of their TV personas and most are inconsequential to the story (Willie Loomis fares best, since he has a bit of a character arc); Barnabas was transformed from an intriguing, lovelorn reluctant vampire into an outright villain; Carolyn's only purpose was to play the victim and David serves virtually no purpose at all (the time they wasted with him hiding could've been put to better use by including Barnabas's sister); there was neither time nor any on-screen indication that Julia was "in love with Barnabas;" and too many people die gruesome deaths. As far as horror movies go, it was aesthetically pleasing, well acted and competently directed, but the tone was way too dark and they tried to pack too much story and too many characters into the script - which thoroughly lacked the stagy nuances of the show's dialogue.

After enduring this horrible Hammer-wannabe hit, I no longer feel any shame in liking Burton's corny dramedy. Compared to THIS film, at least it was unpretentious.

I just watched this on TCM. It was kind of confusing (as I haven't seen a single episode of the show in decades and I was never particularly a fan), but it was still nice to look at (especially Jeff, Willie, and Todd). A decent PG-rated vampire flick, but with way too many characters for a 97-minute movie.

If you saw more of the series before you saw this, you would have realized that Dan Curtis was basically remaking his Original early Barnabas storyline, BUT with a few twists that you could get away on the big screen because of the bigger budget that he couldn't afford to on the series. It also like the Parallel Time storyline that was currently on the tube at the time, allowed actors to explore other aspects of their established characters that were not seen 3 to 4 years before.

The tv series was a classic and ahead of its time.Dragging out stories is typical of soap operas and Dark Shadows was actually better than most soaps at the time as far as pacing, etc. The movie, House of Dark Shadows was simply a way to bring to film a series that was at its peak. The movie got severely edited because Dan Curtis was forced by the movie studio to do that which hurt the film a little.

Oh, those warm and fuzzy Dark Shadows characters! Who is the most lovable? Elizabeth, the cold fish? Roger the prig? Victoria the weirdo? Julia the drama queen? Disturbed David? Barnabas the bloodsucking murderer? Move over, Waltons!

and your last line of your post actually tells why you are here with this stupid post. You were nothing but a shill.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

I saw this back in the mid-1990s when I first became a Dark Shadows fan. I chose to view it as a sort of "What if" scenario on what if Barnabas never became the protagonist and redeemed himself as protector of the Collins Family. This is the What Might have Been, which is kind of a knock off of the typical Dracula movie but not bad.

Originally, Barnabas was supposed to have been destroyed by Burke Devlin. When Barnabas became mega popular, though, it was decided to get rid of Burke Devlin.

I really enjoy this film quite a lot. I think it has a really spooky, Gothic atmosphere which I love. I do agree that it feels like a Hammer film but in my opinion it does what Hammer did and does it equally well. Of course if you have an episode of a show each day you can flesh out the stories and characters a lot more than you can in a movie that is less than 2 hours. But I think for the amount of time they were given it was done rather well. I have no complaints about this film and love it just as much as the original show; both of which are perfect to me.

I never minded this movie. It was a fun flick to go see with my friends on a Friday night back in the day.
Wile we loved the soap, It was still great to see this Reader's Digest version of how cousin Barnabas came back to Collinswood. That is how I view this film. The only missing piece was Angelique.
I also liked Night of Dark Shadows with David Selby and Kate Jackson. (Quentin and Daphne in the soap)

PS, I also enjoyed Burton's film as well. It was funny!
