Anna Should Not Have Been Killed

I was very upset when Anna was killed by Frankenstein. Veronica Carlson is my fave Hammer actress, and such a beautiful girl. They should have kept her alive to exact revenge on Franky after his heinously raping her.

I agree that the rape was heinous and pointless... but as for Frankenstein stabbing her to death... She did stab his 'creation', almost fatally wounding it. I could see how Frankenstein would have been pissed that she nearly killed his chance of finding out the 'secret formula' from Dr. Brandt. The stabbing of Anna was much more in character for Frankenstein than the raping of her, that's for sure.

I think the rape and the killing should have been left out. I suspect they were only put in to make Frankenstein evil rather than an anti-hero, which he had been since Revenge of Frankenstein. The character works better when you can't help but like him. Apart from those two things it's the perfect Hammer film.

I agree, no way should they have killed off Anna. It was sad to see her get killed by Baron Frankenstien (not to mention getting rapped by him!) I still like this movie very much as it is my favorite of the Frankenstien movies.

It's called a horror film, OK? And yes, next time please add a spoiler warning. There are folks who would also enjoy being just as horrified and shocked as you were, which is why people USED watch horror films.

The title of your post gives away a pivotal shocking moment in the film. Please change it already. Moreover, I liked the scene with Frankenstein killing Anna; it was very shocking, unfair and upsetting, which is exactly the sorts of things that a genuinely good and effective fright feature should be.

The Rape and killing of Anna is one of the greatest things in this movie!!!!!!!

Yes, but wasn't it heartbreaking though?

Well it does make her a more sympathetic character. One you can feel sorry for. Also it shows the Baron as a despicable vile character which he is in this pic. But he got his deserved comeuppance in the end.

Yes, I agree. Although Anna's murder was sad, it did add to the general darkness of the movie (the darkest role Peter Cushing has ever played, in my opinion).

Did you know, by the way, they call this kind of extremely sad slaughter of a beautiful girl victim in fictional stories the "body in the refrigerator" effect (read it on a website somewhere)? This term apparently arose from all the shock and controversy the murder of Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man's blonde girlfriend, by the Green Goblin caused back in 1973. The thing with beautiful girls in stories is that you become so enamoured with them and attached to them, and hope that the heroes will end up with them, that when they suddenly get killed, the shock value is really intense, hitting you like a hammerblow in the face.

A good further example of dark films is the kind of hoodie horror they are making today. Eden Lake and Funny Games are two outstanding examples of just how dark - and extremely depressing - a horror movie can be.
