Plot makes absolutely no sense

C'mon, Edward - it's only a movie.

Laura (Dickinson) got word that a government inspector was coming to the Mint where he would've discovered the fake bars and the crime would've been traced to her dead husband, which would've ruined the family name. Thus they kidnap the inspector and Sam (Reynolds) assumes his identity to get the job done.

I mean it is a comedy.
