Could have been really good

Van Cleef is his usual cool, well-protrayed self. But Law... It's kind of pathetic. I'm about half-way through. And I'll finish it because of Van Cleef.

I don't know what the problem is exactly with Law. It's kind of like he's pretending, acting, instead of just "being."

There must have been a lot of actors who would have done better in the young guy's role. Clint Eastwood, of course, but who else?

Heck, even Doug McClure would be better.

...Edit:
Okay, I finished. Well sort of. I was sitting in the room with the TV on. But I just couldn't stay interested and started looking at my Science Fiction Movies book. It would take more than a new actor to fix this one. I'd say the directing was another very weak link.

Not really sure why you'd say that about JPL...He did a fine job. His scene at the card table with Bert "Four-Aces" Kavanaugh fer'instance. JPL jumps back from the table and into this animal-like stance with fury in his eyes. "Piano player - hit three notes!". A terrific scene.

Many people feel that John Phillip Law’s performance was lacking here, and I do think a different actor would have been an improvement, but regardless this is still a great film. I imagine a 1967 era Franco Nero would have seriously elevated this entirely. I loved the flashback scenes, and it’s said that QT was inspired by them for Kill Bill, and I don’t doubt it. What a great score! If I’m ever going out for revenge against someone, this is what I want playing in the background. :)

Lee Van Cleef is his usual bad ass self, great cinematography, amazing score and one hell of an ending. I do rank it highly among spaghetti westerns not directed by one of the three Sergios.
