Casablanca and Star Wars (episode 4, I presume) got a lot of 1's?????
It's almost, if not completely, impossible for me to believe those are sincere votes. What the motivation might be to vote them a 1, I can't imagine. Not to mention those other movies.
Hating a film shouldn't mean someone thinks it's that bad, anyway--just that it produces hate.

reply

I would imagine it's people who've been told how great the film is by everyone they've ever met. They've either grown tired of all the fanfare and decided to give it a 1 out of spite or they finally got around to watching it but it never lived up to their expectations.

It could also just be people who like ranking a film 1.

reply

Most hated movie should be Schindler's List because it is a misleading story calling for humanity and it gets it. But are jews the main and only victims of 2WW? No they are not. Many people from other origin sufferred much more.

reply

Yes, it's true many other groups of people suffered at the hands of the Nazis, gypsies, homosexuals, blacks etc, but this is irrelevant in the context of Schindler's List because it didn't involve any of these people, it was solely concerned with Oskar Schindler's Jewish workers.
To involve other groups and races in the film would not be true to the story.

reply

Black people suffered from the Nazis ? Where ?

Russian people suffered the most - they lost 20 million people in World War II.

"The trick, William Potter,is not minding that it hurts."

reply

I guess the Nazis didn't appreciate all that help invading Poland. Ingrates.

Anyway, I'm sure Russian filmmakers have the subject of suffering during The Great Patriotic War covered adequately.

reply

Black people suffered from the Nazis ? Where ?

The over 20K blacks that lived in Germany from 1895- WW2 who were placed in concentration camps, sterilized and killed by Nazi's. People ignorant of history should really STFU...

People ignorant of history should really STFU...

...or they can ask a question about something they don't know about. Which would you suggest? Continued ignorance or curious investigation?

reply

I don't get this point at all. Why to tell any story without involving the whole history of human kind too?

There is fewer stories that actually deserve to be told more than Oskar Schindler's story. He turned from a war profiteer to a savior of lives in a very sick period in the history of human kind. Can there be actually better character development story?

reply

Wow are you dumb

reply

First two times I watched Casablanca I fell totally asleep. Years later I forced myself to watch it again and to stay awake. And it became one of my favorite movies. But it wasn't those first two times at all, so I can see how someone would give it a 1

reply

Thanks for your remarks, Andre.
It can explain what I was confused about.
Should people wonder how a 1 for a great film can be sincere, you give a good example.

I too have sometimes really disliked certain films, only - after re-watching - to gain a whole new appreciation of them, and they become favourites of mine.

I think may times people watch a film once and dislike it because it didn't suit them in some way, without trying to view it on the terms of the maker of the movie. I like to think of films as art, and when I stop to consider what the film-maker wanted me to see, it changes my perspective and appreciation can grow.

'Then' and 'than' are different words - stop confusing them.

reply

Just stupid people being spiteful. Sure, I can understand if a person thinks a film is overrated. There are a couple in the Top 25 that I personally don't think are as great as they're made out to be. Nevertheless, I don't think anyone can honestly give any of these films a 1-rating. That's simply ridiculous.

reply

i think the ones who are rating them 1s dont even have completed these movies. i feel pity for those guys what's wrong with their lives rating these gems as 1 :(

reply

Sorry, but I have to disagree. One man's gem is another man's muck. I, for instance, cannot understand why the Fifth Element gets the reviews it does, to me it is possibly the worst example of over acting, cheesy dialogue and incomprehensible plotting I've ever seen. if I could, I would rate it '0' Does that make me a fool? No, it means I have a different perspective which everyone is entitled to have. Most of the films on that list I recognise as good but I wouldn't watch all of them because some of them just don't appeal to me.

reply

I too can't understand anyone voting a film a 1 on hearsay or indeed any reason ... Personally I've never voted any film lower than a 5 .... Even Lair of the White Worm, which is my least favorite film ... But maybe I'm too generous

reply

Agreed. The Shawshank Redemption was vastly overrated in my eyes and I hate One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest because I find Jack Nicholson only ever plays himself in everything he does; Over the top and up himself. However, I agree that the films themselves were masterpieces in their own right, just not for me.

reply

Well, the imdb top feels more like a popularity contest than an actual list were people rate movies based on their quality.
I think the tendency will be the older movies going down from the top...

reply

The problem with IMDB is 12 year olds log on and think it's cool to slag any movie before 1990.

I thought Forrest Gump is massively over-rated, and the girl I saw the movie with agreed with me. Yet other's seem to love it to death.

Some movies just aren't people's cup of tea. I think Eraserhead is the biggest waste of black and white film ever, but some love it. Each to his/her own.

It was years after loving the Dollar's trilogy, I heard Once Upon a Time in the West was slow, and boring. I finally sat down and watched it. I was blown away and I still am whenever I watch it. But if you only like watching movies like Transformers, or have the attention span of a goldfish, you'll probably hate it.

reply

The reason people vote them 1's is to bring the ratings down so their favorite films have higher scores. When The Dark Knight was out, people were actually campaigning on the boards to get people to vote The Godfather and Shawshank Redemption 1's, so TDK would top them. Stupid, if you ask me.

Here's to the health of Cardinal Puff.

reply

That is why the rating scores are weighted and not the actual arithmetic mean. The vote system can tell when someone is voting to change a score rather then giving their honest thoughts on the film.

reply

That is why the rating scores are weighted and not the actual arithmetic mean.
That sounds right.

"Did you make coffee...? Make it!"--Cheyenne.

reply

They do not get all of those with that method.

If someone votes also a lot of other movies and does not use only 1 and 10 and some other details his/her downvoting will count too.
Sadly a lot of those where also within that mentioned group of organised downvoters. If you take a look at the top 250 per years list you'll see some pretty astonishing titles and placements, some titles are still a bit strange with their positionings

And then there is the group of 'concerned' mothers or religious or... whatever fanatic people.
I do know of at least one female over 45 who down-rated every single episode of ~ 150 episode TV-series without having even watched an episode, because of it's supernatural story elements. Her priest told her so..... and she is sadly not alone with that at all. Some look for pre-marriage sex, atheists, gay, critism at churches, nations, political parties,... and whatever.

a fanatic isnt a fan

Babylon 5,Farscape,Firefly,Wiseguy, Wire,Sharpe,Sherlock

reply

well, I'm a twenty-two year-old, I hate watching movies like Transformers and I definitely don't have the attention span of a goldfish, but I really hated OUATITW and almost fell asleep halfway through it (although I had the decency to keep myself awake till the end!). in regard to rating, I gave it a 5 because of the music and actors and sincerely think that's what it's worth. so I want to ask you not to judge anybody that doesn't share your opinion.

reply

watch it again in a few years a lot of viewers have done so and have done complete 180's

reply

Or how about we dont waste time with movies we dont like?

The spirit of abysmal despair

reply

People are silly creatures, that's for sure. I'm not a huge fan of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but it doesn't deserve a 1 rating.

Unfortunately, a lot of people seem to disregard the 10 star variant rating system altogether, and simply rate movies based on three reactions:
"didn't like it" - 1, "ok" - 6/7, "liked it" - 10.

Why else would someone give Seven Samurai or The Godfather a 1? Anyone who gave any of these movies 1 star clearly hasn't seen any movies that actually deserve it. Or maybe they have, and they're their favorite movies ("Jason X is the best movie ever, you guys, for serious!")

reply

It's IMDB's fault for not providing a meaning to each star. For example that other site I use jinni.com has meanings for every single star, and that is what I use for my criteria of staring on imdb.

Values are as follows:
10 stars: Must see
9: awesome
8: great
7: good
6: okay
5: so-so
4: disappointing
3: poor
2: bad
1: awful
0: terrible

Of course that makes 11 possibilities, not 10. But it's not imdb after all. You don't agree with the values? Well, again, nobody can and will ever agree unless IMDB starts offering its own standard.

reply

I use the website to find new movies to watch. If I really dislike a movie (terrible), I've gotta give it a 1! That's because 0 is NOT rating it; therefore, it wouldn't count on your recommendations...

reply

0 does give it a rating on jinni. The only way to see it though is that the rating meter turns from grey to red and it says your rating: terrible. I don't use the 0 rating on IMDB.

reply

I'd give the Godfather a 1 because I have absolutely no idea what's going on in it, everyone just mumbles. That kinda kills any impact on me the film might have otherwise had. But I don't because clearly other people can sift through the mumbling.

reply

maybe its just a misunderstanding. maybe all those people think that giving it a 1 means that the movie is #1. Because i dont see any of these movies (especially not the Empire Strikes Back) getting a sincere 1 from anyone any other way.(this is obviously a joke, im not a troll, so dont anyone get your undies in a bunch saying that this is a dumb theory)

reply

Some of us just like to rate movies as a 1 just to be trolls

:D

A lot of stupid people out there.

reply

A lot of people rate them 1 out 10 because they think the rating is too high. Of course there are a few trolls who actually give it a 1 out of 10 to spite the movie, but most of the 1's are because they want to bring down the rating a bit. Not because they think the movie is actually a 1 out of 10.

reply

I agree with you that if a person hates a movie so much, they shouldn't bother to rate it. However, such hatred evokes violent passion, which much be expressed. For example, I had a horrible experience on a certain airline. Therefore, I emailed them what I thought of my experience. Extreme emotions must be expressed.

That having been said, I disagree with anybody who rated any of these movies one star. I believe they have very bad taste.
