Is anyone else kinda sad at the end of this movie...

...knowing that Mike is off to join the Marines...in 1968 America?? Knowing that he is almost certainly on his way to Vietnam, the family is surprisingly happy to see him off...

Amazingly, I hadn't made that connection until I watched this film yesterday on TCM for the umteenth time. - I was a soph in HS that year, Nam was on everybody's TV every night, and I knew I might be swept up in the draft in a couple of years. Think they were all keeping an upbeat mood for Mike's sake, but I doubt there was a dry eye afterwards. Stirred a lot of memories :'(

I was always sad too but now I prefer to think that he came home, went to college, and eventually grew up to be Vice President!

I like to think he came back and went to Faber college and ended up being "rush chairman" of a fun loving fraternity.

It is very sad. But remember when they narrated that Helena had a hard time sleeping because she was worried about him being drafted. They just took on a happy demeanor to see him off.

Actually, they're lined up on the porch, glum as hell.

While filmed in the late 1960s, in real life this story took place beginning in 1961 (the wedding was Sept 1961). The film being based on the book, in real life that scene then likely reflected the actual time the real Mike left to join the Marines (the early 1960s).
