The alternate ending is actually good (spoilers)

Most people seem to hate the alternate version, but the fact is that it's neither bad nor illogic.
I guess that's how the movie was intended to end, before Corbucci changed his mind and decided to kill the hero.Remember that Loco did not shoot directly at the sheriff.

While it is satisfying to see Loco get his comeuppance in the alternate ending, the ending is horribly contrived to the point of almost feeling like a parody. The end with Silence and co getting gunned down is far more powerful and carry's more of a impact as a conclusion. It has a brutal realness to it that makes it stand out more then just another typical hero wins ending we have seen in 500 other westerns.

The movie’s message, specifically with the criticism of bounty hunters explained right before the credits, would not have the same force unless our hero was a victim. The alternate ending doesn’t mesh with the goal of the movie.
