I always thought it was funny that McGarrett, Danno, Chin wore dark colored heavy (polyester) suits in the hot tropical climate of Hawaii. I don't think that was realistic. Fancy silk or cotton Aloha (Hawaiian) shirts are actually common for men conducting business in Hawaii, as was shown in The Descendants with George Clooney.

shareIf they walked around in Aloha shirts, no one would take them seriously. If they wore Aloha shirts when this show came ib the air in 1968, or wore them later on, they would be laughed at. They wore suits because that is what the mainland audience expected to see them wear. I don't think that is strange or a detriment.

Too be fair, one (I think it's Danny) wears a green suit in the early seasons and it looks awful. Steve wears pretty tropical stuff when off-duty--that awful white hat...
I always thought McGarret's suits looked exceptionally tailored. In 1968, no one would have taken these guys seriously in anything but traditional business suits.

Only in the first five seasons. After that the funky colors and styles of the mid 1970s arrived with great flourish! McGarret’s pant legs got wider at the bottom (though not as wide as Chin Ho’s), the neckties got really wide and stripey or flowery, and best of all (lol) McGarret’s blazers and sport coats became too good to be true! Bright Turkish red, Dusty pink, powder blue, Royal Blue (was it velvet lol)!
Danny started wearing camel colored suits, which were rather dashing at the time, though they didn’t quite make the statements Steve’s did. 🤣
That's something that has always bugged me about the character of Horatio Caine in CSI Miami. You can see right here how he was dressed in every episode.
