Sandy Dennis

This is one of my favorite movies but JESUS! Sandy Dennis bugs me in this film. She sounds handicapped. And a tad too annoying.

I thought the cast was excellent. I just found Sandy too unattractive compared to the rough looking Liz Taylor.

reply

I think she's brilliant in this. Not in anything else, but here, she was perfect.

She's my favorite character in this. I always laugh when she says "Why would you wanna wash someone who's 16?"

I love her in The Out of Towners too.

I like the entire cast here - it's such a tight, tense script you need everyone pulling their weight, and I think Sandy Dennis does so very well.

I also like Sandy Dennis in general, and was sorry when she died so young. One of my favorite of her roles is in _Sweet November_. And though it's been many years since I've seen it, I remember her anchoring _Up the Down Staircase_. (Incidentally, the novel is very worth reading: it's format and structure are very unusual).

I loved her in this, as well. Her character was convincingly intoxicated and possibly tired, as well, most of the time -- and struggling with her pregnancy/marriage issues -- so to me there wasn't anything from her to be annoyed about.

I didn't know she was in Sweet November (1968). Thanks! I should've watched it when it was on TCM a couple of months ago.

"Violence!"

I love her performance in this truly terrifying film.
What I find incredible about her performance, given the themes in this film, is that, if the trivia section is accurate, she had a miscarriage on the set while filming. My mind can not wrap around that. I don't know how a woman goes through that and can continue to do her job given the lines her character has to speak and listen too.

Best actress, IMHO.

I wonder why Melinda Dillon who originated the role on stage, and Tony nominated, was not cast

reply

Oh, Melinda Dillon. That might have been interesting.

I'm in the Sandy-Dennis-bugged-me camp. She always seemed to give the same performance.

But then I disliked the supporting cast in VIRGINIA WOLFE. Dennis' neurotic bravura is too distracting, and George Segal is throw-away casting.

One can take issue with Burton (whom I liked) and Taylor, but I felt they worked more or less.

That's interesting because Sandy Dennis is my favorite thing about this movie. She was a fascinating actress.

I watched about 1500 movies in the last 5 years, and Sandy Dennis' performance might be the BEST one I've seen.

She incredible in this film, so authentic, so special, so alive, so interesting. It's like she's not acting, she IS the character, just living the situation.

Absolutely sublime.
