What year was this film supposed to take place in?

Django is accused of being a "Yankee" and he replies "I fought for the North" but how long after the civil war is this supposed to be. Major Jackson and his Red Hoods are still fighting their own war for the south but are we talking months or years after the war?

reply

Well Django is still wearing his military blues so it couldn't have more more than a couple of years after the war. Also Jackson and his cronies are supposed to be like the KKK which wasn't formed until a couple of years after the war. Late 1860's would be my guess. The only anachronism for that time would be the machine gun. I do not believe they had that gun until the turn of the century.

Are we sure it wasn't during the Mexican Revolution? (1910) They used machine guns then, and the KKK would fit into that time frame easily.
Otherwise, I would put it around 1870-80's.

"Realistically", it can't be later than the late 1860s. There's no way Django's Union uniform would last more than a couple/three years tramping around the Western desert.

Ignoring that, it's gotta be set at least around 1880 or so, if not much, much later. Everyone's got the standard lever-action rifles you see in Westerns set in that era.

More importantly, Django's got that machine gun. That's not a Civil War era Gatling gun, which loaded the next bullet into the chamber by cranking a lever round and round. Instead, his gun worked by using the recoil to feed the next bullet in. That puts the date at no earlier than 1884, when the Maxim gun was invented. It used this recoil mechanism for the first time. That means it's at least 20 years after the end of the Civil War.

Meanwhile, that grave he's hiding behind says "Mercedes Zaro, 1873-1889". The grave doesn't look in the least ways new, so that makes it at least 1890, 25 years after the end of the Civil War. That makes Django, the Major, every one of the Major's soldiers, at a minimum 45 years old. Nope.

Even if what Django has is a Maxim gun, the Maxim didn't have multiple barrels like Django's gun. And the Gatling gun was not portable to be able to be lifted by one man. The Gatling gun was so heavy that it was mounted like artillery, and wheeled around. I don't know what kind of gun Django's gun was supposed to be, other than a spaghetti Western prop designed to look like an early machine gun.

In other words, the year it was set in doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and this gaping plothole has to be ignored in order to enjoy the movie.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

When I saw her death date on the tombstone as 1889 I thought for sure I was misreading it because of the other data you cite. Guess not.
