When I was a teenager in the 80's, I felt obligated to like Davy. I mean, he's the cute one, right? But I could never get into him. I fell for Micky instead. I thought he was soooo funny and kinda cute. Now, Mike is my hands-down favorite. Very sexy, talented, and he can be cute and funny as well. I appreciate Peter for his talents and for allowing himself to be portrayed as the dumb one. Sorry Davy, I still can't get anything going for you.

My only problem with Mike is that he can seem like an arrogant downer. In real life, too. I saw his audition reel, and in it he had this "too cool for school" attitude, didn't smile once, refused to sing when asked, didn't take his hat off, and put his feet all over the furniture. I'm surprised he ever got the job... unless maybe the tv producers were looking for that sort of badboy attitude.

On the flip side we have Davy who is as charming and approachable as they get. And he had the dance moves!

Peter was a little spaced out, but he was such a great philosopher hippy tree hugger veggie type, I have to admire him. (Love his "ice cream" monologue in the movie Head)

But my fave Monkee is--for reasons everyone else has already covered--MICKEY.

I started watching The Monkees (in reruns) when I was a kid, and have been a life long die hard fan. Here in CT, in late 70's early 80's, it was almost impossible to hear a Monkees song on the radio until some of the local station(s) switched to "oldies" format. Anyway, Micky has always been my favorite, followed closely by Mike, Peter and Davy. I can remember seeing Dolenz, Jones, Boyce and Hart perform on, I believe, The Mike Douglass Show. We did not have cable TV at the time (1975 or 1976?) and I must have been changing the channel dial and POW- there was Micky!
I did get to see The Monkees (sans- Mike) in 1986 at the old outdoor Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT and then in 1987 again at Oakdale Theatre and also The Hartford Civic Center. I enjoyed all three concerts very much. When I was a kid I wrote to The Monkees at the address on the back of their first album. Of course the letter was returned-lol.

Micky is my favorite too.

I've always liked Peter best. Yes, Davy was cute, but he was almost too cute.

Funny story...at least I think so. My grandfather hardly ever said anything, but one day I was laughing while watching the Monkees, and he said to my mother "What is she laughing at? That one guy looks like someone sat on his face!" Of course, I laughed harder!!!

Mike Nesmith, of course! He was the only genuine musician in the band.

Mike Nesmith-by far the hottest man I have ever seen.

Err... Mike was a talented musician but he was not the most musically talented of the Monkees. Peter Tork played half a dozen instruments VERY WELL (guitar, bass, banjo, keyboard, and more) I hear he kinda "taught" Mickey how to drum when they decided to go real-life with their act. (Mickey had dabbled in guitar but never "drummed" before being cast as the drummer in the show).

Mike was certainly NOT the only genuine musician. Peter was a musical prodigy. Mike even INSISTED that Peter (not himself) be allowed to play guitar on their first album. (read the trivia)

Peter and I believe Mike as well have both said similar things: That the Monkees were mixed up. Peter should have been lead guitar, with Mike as bass. Davy should have been the drummer (he had really good rythym) and showboat Mickey should've been the front-man. Those were their best talents.

Possibly Mike was the more prolific songwriter, but Peter wrote a few good ones too, including the song played at the end of season 2 episodes. "In this Generation, in this lovin time" (For Pete's sake is the actual title)

OK, I'll retract my comment about Michael being the only genuine musician. I didn't mean to slight the talents of Peter, Mickey and Davy. I have a heavy Mike Nesmith bias because of what he accomplished after the Monkees, so forgive me for my insensitivity.

It's true that the band was inconsistent musically, and I suspect the producers were making a lot of decisions that the band would not have on their own. Certainly the fact that they had to appeal to a TV audience and its advertisers also compromised the music they would have made. And then, of course, there's that whole Beatles thing.

Regardless, I meant no disrespect to the other members in the band, who were all genuine musicians (even though Michael always struck me as the one with the most musical vision, I must add).

reply

The way I heard it is that the band was split down the middle: Two guys came from acting and comedy (Micky and Davy), and two were musicians (Mike and Peter). It's a brilliant approach for the Monkees formula and goes a long way toward explaining why they were so successful both in music and with the show. It worked even better because they were all genuinely funny, and they were all good on the music side of things as well (Davy had probably the best voice in the band, which makes sense due to his theater background).

I'll bet you could suck a golf ball through a garden hose.

Mike Nesmith. In fact, I think it accounts for my fondness for the name Mike.I liked Peter's boyish sweetness, too. When i was little, I went back and forth between who my favorite was, but I think it was really always Mike.

Of course Davy was just complete eye-candy in the show, but I've always had a more serious crush on Peter. I was always a sucker for Peter's sandy hair, dimples, and innocent charm. Of the CHARACTERS I've always liked him best.

But from watching real interviews of the four guys, etc, I have a feeling that the REAL guy (not TV character) that I would have had the most fun hanging out with would be Mickey. Gotta love that goofball.

When I first started watching the show as a kid, I had a big crush on cute little Davy. Mickey was the funniest. Peter was sweet and silly. Mike was like the leader (which was obvious because he wore that hat :P Where is that hat? It should be in a TV or Rock n Roll hall of fame somewhere); also Mike had his own brand of sensuality goin' on.

Truth is I like all four pretty much equally and if those blasted dvd prices ever come down (WAY down) I will by the two seasons of the show. When I save up a little money and can actually use it for musical extras, I'll buy the Anthology. It's weird that the greatest hits cd someone gave me only has one Mike-led song "Listen to the Band" and that's just not right.
