Alright for Children?

Is this alright for a 13 year old? I don't really want to trust the ratings given seeing as they might be the original ones from the '60s. This sounds interesting.

Depends on the 13 year old in question. I would have been fine with it at that age, and I know kids that age I would have no problem showing it to (with the consent of their parents, of course), but it would vary from child to child.
It is quite disturbing, but everybody likes a good scare now and then, you know. At least I do.

There are a zillion other movies out there to play to a 13 year old kid. Why choose this one. I wish I hadn't seen it at 13, I have never got it out of my mind or watched it since. I have considered watching it on youtube, but would really need to steel myself and prob will never put myself thru it again.

There is some nudity in it but there are more serious reasons I would not show it to a child.

reply

Any child who aspires to be a serial killer should definitely watch this.

reply

Serial killer? Doesn't that comment belong on a Friday the 13th board? Another guy said it would make the kids be rapists, but there isn't a rape scene in the movie either. The girl died because she was left in the cellar without food for days and got sick. Kidnapping is the subject, and whatever sympathy develops for Stamp's character is gone by the end of the movie.

We all know kids will be watching much worse than this in their teens.

Now, Three in the Attic... that was disturbing, but I'd have no qualms about letting a fourteen year old watch it if they wanted, younger than that would bother my conscience. Let's not forget that they're not babies at that age.

The only possible reason why You should allow Your 13 yr. old to watch this is, to warn Them of People like this. It also depends on the Child too, after all You don't want a timid, sensitive Child to View This.

I recognise this comes several years to late to be of much use to you, but perhaps it will be helpful to others. Although I haven't seen the film, the novel was a school text when I was fifteen or thereabouts. It was a deeply disturbing thing to read, and I'd not be happy to see a child of mine compelled to do so as I was. For reference, at a later age I read the novels of Thomas Harris (Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, &c, which contain darker events, and was less perturbed by them than I was by this. If this is a reasonably faithful adaptation, which it seems to be, I know it would not have been suitable viewing for me at the age of thirteen.

No.

Of course, this kid is probably well into their thirties now... but for anyone else curious--

Considering what kids see in video games and online these days, The Collector is tame in regards to what it actually shows: only implied nudity and some blood during one tense scene. However, the themes are pretty heavy: kidnapping, obsession, misogyny, the possibility of sexual assault. It depends on what you deem inappropriate.
