That occurred to me as well, but it doesn't really fit the story line as presented. Still, it's possible.
shareI suspect that, at least in the original book or screenplay, this was exactly the case.
Since it's hard to know what to believe coming from either the brother or sister, I still think it's possible that was what Preminger was trying to convey. However, that was a far more sensitive subject back in the 60s and I'm not sure they could have gotten by with making that point too clear.

This is alluded to very subtly in the sequence between the inspector and the wise lady who worked as director of the school.
Inspector: He's not the child's father, he's Miss Lake's brother.
Director (with a bemused smirk): Curiouser and curiouser...
I really suspected that too, and wouldn't be surprised to find it in the book. For all we know, it could've just been omitted from the movie to avoid controversy. I almost suspected he really was Bunny's father too, but then the movie more or less confirms he wasn't.

shareI thought we're supposed to at least suspect that. For ratings purposes, I think they diverted full suspicion from that. It's not material to the plot either way, so the suspicion is enough.
One line especially seemed injected, near the end when Stevie complains of resenting "that boy" who deflected Ann's interest from Steve.
Also, Carol Lynley is so sexy, it's hard to ignore my own feelings on the matter.
Weren't she and Dullea in another movie together, something like Blue Denim? Oh, wait, that was Brandon deWilde. They were in some kind of crazy house, though.
