"Ambush"

In "Ambush" 18 September 1967, the second episode of the third season, Victoria reunites with Simon Carter, who she met in "Pursuit", 10 October 1966, the fifth episode of the second season.

The location of both episodes is near the town of Sandhill, which is probably fictional.

"Ambush" happens a year after "Pursuit", and also some time after Porfirio Diaz became ruler of Mexico. Simon says that the Yaquis have been crossing the border into the USA since Diaz took over in Mexico. Diaz became president in 1876.

I note that the Barkley ranch is supposed to be near Stockton, California. Stockon is about 425 miles from the closest point on the US/Mexican border near Tijuana, and about 1,570 miles from the farthest point on the Mexican border near Brownsville, Texas. Of course Sandhill could be tens or hundreds of miles north of the Mexican border, but the farther from the border it is the less likely the Yaquis would be to travel that far within the US.

"Ambush" opens when Victoria arrives in Sandhill, and the action takes only two or three days. Audra decides to follow Victoria and takes a train part way, and then a stage to Sandhill, and arrives in a buggy at the mission at the climax of the episode.

And it seems rather hard to believe that Audra's trip that far south, including tens or hundreds of miles by stagecoach, could take only one, two, or three days. The episode would have made more sense if the first scene had Audra decide to follow Victoria, and the second scene had Victoria arrive in Sandhill sometime after Audra had started to follow her.

You're probably accurate, although I personally couldn't care less. But, yes, it does seem silly that Audra arrives
so quickly!

I just recently watched both episodes on Youtube, and found them both superb, especially "Pursuit." What I'm curious
about is the external set for the Mission. It couldn't be the Republic backlot, as we can see tons of open space
surrounding this location. I'm wondering it was at Vazquez Rocks, where a lot of the location shooting was done.
Interesting little set, which I'd bet no longer stands.

To me it seems an obvious task in writing that if Character A follows character B from C to D, and arrives a certain amount of time after Character B does, then the interval between Character A and Character B leaving should be approximately equal to the interval between them arriving. But possibly the scriptwriters wanted to show Victoria meeting Simon as the first scene in "Ambush" to set up that the episode was about them.

I'm sure that there are sites about the outdoor sets used in movie and tv production as well as books about them.

There is a movie, Fort Utah (1967) with a lot of scenes inside a fort set. And there is at least one scene where someone looks out through fort gates and a Vasquez Rocks formation is visible a short distance away. It is possible that most of the fort scenes were filmed at Paramount studios, there must have been at least a section of fort wall and a gate built at Vasquez Rocks. Anyway, this shows that sometimes movie sets were built at Vasquez Rocks.

The only outdoors location listed is Vasquez Rocks.

According to Google Maps, there aren't any standing buildings at Vasquez Rocks that look like a mission. But when I zoomed in and moved around the area I did see, west of the entrance, what looked like foundations of demolished buildings, possibly from former movie sets.

"Big Valley" was shot at the old Republic Studios (now CBS Radford). Much of their backlot has long been
redressed, with really only the "Seinfeld" Streets still being used. Their Western sets and "Gilligan's Island"
lagoon are long gone.
