Who was the intended audience for this movie ?

Don't get me wrong- I LOVE THIS PSYCHO MOVIE but WHO was this made for?
1/2 of it is Peyton Place-like soap opera. The other half is pre-ratings "grind house" or "Adults Only" seedy material.
Would make a GREAT double bill with "Who Killed Teddy Bear" !

It's a noir tragedy, but told from a woman's side, which is less common.
