Yesterday

All I can say is, thank God that when Aldrich made this, when the film jumps to the present day, it says "1964". There are imbeciles, and I mean bonafide IDIOTS on the Baby Jane board who actually started a thread saying that they didn't understand what "Yesterday" meant, when it was flashed on the screen after the opening credits. One girl said she watched with a group of friends, who were all confounded by this! One guy wrote that he went so far as to try to research it on IMDB, he was so confused by what "Yesterday" could possibly mean. Is it the drugs nowadays, or are people really, genuinely, THAT stupid??

I'm sorry to say it, but people often are INCREDIBLY stupid. An example: in the movie "Driving Miss Daisy," the maid Idella dies quickly and apparently painlessly while shelling peas. In a later scene, commenting on Idella's death, Miss Daisy comments, "Idella was lucky." Clearly she meant she was lucky to have had such a quick, painless death, but you would not believe the silly meanings people have ascribed to this comment on the fan board. In "Rosemary's Baby" during the scene where Rosemary was trying to escape, she pretended to spill her purse to distract the men so she could grab the elevator. The elevator operator, Diego, steps off the elevator to help gather up her things; she gets on the elevator so she can go up by herself. The operator shouts "Mrs. Woodhouse!" and from this, half the posters have inferred that Diego was involved in the baby-stealing plot. I know I'm rambling, but such stupidity makes me crazy.

UPDATE: A 40 year old guy just posted on the Baby Jane board that he simply does not understand what "Yesterday" means after the opening credits. Are these people trying to be funny? How can anyone be THAT stupid?

reply

It's best not to ask a question like that, because someone will undoubtedly come up with an answer.

"How can anyone be THAT stupid?"

That question was asked nine years ago, when we had not yet seen people walking around outdoors, and even alone in their cars, wearing masks. Just when you think you are as cynical as you can be about the dumbness of the masses, you witness examples of stupidity far worse than you could have imagined. The sad thing is, there is no bottom to the pit of human moronitude.

My new years resolution is not to expect much from anyone. May seem negative but in turn will save me a lot of stress.

We've met before, haven't we?

One of my favorite quotes is "Always expect anything from anybody. Even the devil was once an angel."

doesn't yesterday mean the day before today, which was the day before tomorrow and the day after yesterday on Tuesday?

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

I've googled this and can't find anything on it. However, I've just learned that NYU is offering a course on the meaning of "Yesterday" as shown on the screen in Baby Jane. It should be an eye opening class!
