In "The Vikings" Ernest Borgnine played Kirk Douglas's father, but was younger.

Dick Van Dyke has always seemed youthful while Stapleton was somewhat ‘matronly’ even while relatively young. It seems silly casting on paper but I think it works in the context of the film.
