What the nay-sayers don't realize

I have read many posts degrading this film on everything from acting, photography, dialogue, and more. What people here fail to realize is this film almost single handedly inspired Steven Spielberg to become a filmmaker. Sitting in the theater at age 16 watching Lawrence, he was completely overwhelmed (like many others) by the power of this masterpiece. When the film was over, he couldn't get up, he was stunned.
Don't take my word for it, do your own research. There is a REASON why this film is considered one of the greatest color-films ever made.

There are intelligent individuals, but people as a group are stupid.

"There are intelligent individuals..."

Yes, there are. Dozens of them, all over the world.

LOL!

So...somebody was affected by subjective film matter and that makes it objective for everyone? The beauty of film is that you can draw your own conclusions while viewing. I happen to think this movie, while beautifully framed and shot, was elaborately drawn-out and boring. I first watched it 10 years ago and just re-watched it today - I can say I didn't enjoy either viewing.

It was horribly boring and terribly mis-over-acted.

I disagree with the notion that Lawrence of Arabia is boring. For starters, the subject matter is far from boring. Secondly, the photography, the color, the music, the story behind it, and the costumes all enhance a great story, to begin with. It looks especially fantastic when shown on a great big, wide movie theatre screen. Having said all of the above, however, I'll admit to one thing:

While Lawrence of Arabia is one of my favorite films, and another film that I've liked well enough to see more than once, it doesn't hold the same special place in my heart regarding movies as West Side Story.

So? You really think Steven Spielberg wouldnt have found a different motivator than this movie had this movie not come out? I liked this movie very much (first time i saw it this week) but the whole "inspired this or that" defense is as wrong as it was 50 years ago.

Most likely, but not necessarily. Depends on how often he was going to the movies around then. If he skipped this movie and didnt see anything else remarkable for the next year or two, he might have fallen into some random job and stuck with it the rest of his life.

Not how life works. Creative people will try to be creative no matter what, often at expense of their own well being. And movies are hardly the only way to get inspired.

I did not realize that.

Lawrence of Arabia sucks anyhow. Some brilliant cinematography. A few good moments of dialogue. And, WOW, so many extras.
