So do you think that whole experience was just her imagination as she was dying? Like Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge or some theories about Sandy in "Grease" who say Danny Zucco did not save her life and she did not "nearly" drown but actually drowned and it was all imagined?

I've always taken it that she lived by mistake and was haunted by the spirits because she was really supposed to be dead. Then, when she did die at the end, her body was found with the others in the car as it should have been originally. That's just always been my take on it.

This movie scared the hell out of me as a kid and I've seen it so many times since then. It doesn't scare me the same way, of course, but I still find it so creepy and enjoyable!

If you're asking what were the writers thinking, I don't think they put much thought into it, hence the inconsistencies. So it's however you choose to interpret it. But I think it's a great film not for its logic or lack thereof, but just the low budget twilight zone atmosphere it created. And it was of its era: 1962. I went to the '89 theater revival.
