Robert Mitchum terrifies me.........

Having seen him in Cape Fear, and Night of the Hunter, all Robert Mitchum had to do was appear on screen and I was scared. That said, strangely enough he was also one of my favorite actors. I've seen him in movies where he doesn't play the "bad guy", and it doesn't matter, he still scares me. Probably a good thing I never met him in "real life".

He was so scary he had to joke and sweet talk Polly Bergen before they shot the houseboat scene. SHE was scared by his acting and knew he was only acting.

Robert Mitchum terrified me in this movie, I was scared to look at him for the longest time after that. I remember watching Scrooged for the first time and I jumped when I first saw him.

the saddest thing in life is wasted talent

Yes, Mitchum was a terrific actor who was underrated. Though he cultivated a don't care image, Charles Laughton and John Huston thought very highly of him. Regarding "Cape Fear", the one thing that doesn't ring true for me is the ending. Faced with life in prison, why doesn't Max rush Sam, forcing him to shoot and likely kill him? Cady doesn't look so wounded that he can't charge Bowden.

I just find the cat cool in whatever role he's in. He was one of a kind, I think. With that said, his performances in Cape Fear and The Night of The Hunter are very effective and they definitely leave a lasting impression.
