Gable's Voice

After wrestling with the wild horse, Gable collapses on top of the horse. Every line he says after that is in a painfully hoarse voice. He sounds like he's about to die right there. I've seen many of his movies and never heard him sound this bad. Were they planning to re-dub his lines? I'm surprised he was allowed to do the stunts himself in that desert heat.

I noticed that too. Maybe it accelerated his heart attack. I mean, how many times did they film that sequence?

"Did you make coffee...? Make it!"--Cheyenne.

reply

Someone mentioned on another thread that the 3 pack a day Gable might have had lung cancer.

reply

Anybody of any age would have been out of breath for a few minutes after a wrestling match with a horse.

reply

I doubt that an actor like Clark Gable would be allowed to do those scenes with roping the horse. His agents wouldn't have approved. There must have been a double doing those scenes, yes, somebody who looked like Gable.

reply

Gable insisted on doing his own stunts out of sheer boredom.
