Age difference: Elvis/AngelaLansbury
How funny that she played his mother and was 36 years old, just 10 years older than Elvis.

shareAs I watched it today and remembered that fact about her barely being much older than he I wondered if she felt insulted that they thought she looked old enough to play his mother. It cant be flattering to be thought to look much older than you really are.
shareLandsbury always had a mature look, even when she was a teenager. She cracks me up in this movie, though. "Chadwick, give Mama some sugar." And Roland Winters as Mr. Gates cracks me up too, with the eye rolling at everything that comes out of her mouth. It's a fun film.
shareI agree, she always looked somewhat motherly or even grandmotherly. She reminded me so much of my Grandma in this movie with her Southern manners and her fussy nature. Angela Lansbury is one of my favorite parts of this movie.
"All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust."
I agree she does make me laugh with the very over exaggeration of the southern accent in this movie. I found myself repeating things that she said as thick as she did. I remember there was a word she said and it was so funny with the accent i kept repeating it. But now it left me and i just saw this on Elvis birthday this week.
sharethis wasn't the only film she appeared in where she played a motherly or grandmotherly type to a star that wasn't much younger than she like somebody mentioned previously there's the Menturian Candidate for which she was nominated for the best supporting actress oscar or another example would be when she played the town whore Minnie Littlejohn in long hot summer who was somewhat of a surrogate mother to Clara who was Played by Joanne Woodward whom Ms Lansbury is only 4 years 4 months and 11 days older than and the two are dear friends to this day
"why are you married to him then if you can't work with him how do you live with him?"
In the original script it was explained that she was not only his mother, but his sister.
shareYeah, Angela always looked older and I doubt that she was the least bit offended. There are several other actors and actresses who appeared older than their actual age.
I'm the kind of guy, when I move - watch my smoke. But I'm gonna need some good clothes though.
I'm watching this now and she doesn't look old enough to be his mother.

my mom had me at 12 so its not that much of a stretch.
shareAs Angela waltzed off with the acting honors as usual I doubt she cared that she played older parts (they tend to be the juicier ones anyway). I can't decide whether she was too over-the top but I think the frivolous nature of the movie lent itself to broad acting.
shareNobody's mentioned her classic line at the wedding, "I was a child bride", in that thick Southern drawl.
shareTo me, oddly, she did look old enough to be his mother and in fact always looked older than her years in her youth and into the 1960's. Yet, she aged well and in her later years looked great compared to some of the glamour pusses of her generation! So I suppose she got some revenge. Personally, I find her way over the top here, but its such a fluffy movie that I suppose she just figured she'd have fun with it. Fluffy, but very entertaining and beautifully filmed, I should add. I really liked the early 60's style of Lansbury's home also!
shareWas Jerry Lee Lewis your father?

Movies and TV shows are rife with "parents" just a few years older than their "children", it's nothing new.
Life is pain. Anyone who says differently is selling something.
She was thirty-five when the movie was filmed in March and April of 1961. Elvis was twenty-six.
shareMY MOM IS TEN...WHATS WRONG WITH THAT?🤔
