much much better than the ttmr version!

this movie gets straight to the point like all french films do.
TTMR is more unwieldy( i have no idea how much he killed in the movie to prove the point unlike here).

the story is chilling but everything is presented in a sleek way. the quality of actors is far superior and the presentation is something else. the french know a thing or two about making films like none other! though in the modern era they have fallen back!

delon presented the conniving and callous character very well.

Ending was right on the money( the novel's no country for old men style ending not withstanding)

I just watched the Criterion version yesterday (incredible!) and will now watch all the bonus features which my regular "Purple Noon" DVD from ca. 2010 (?) does not contain.
It's indeed the very best Highsmith adaptation of any of her novels. In an interview Highsmith stated that Delon was her favorite Tom Ripley.
I enjoyed "The Talented Mr. Ripley" with Matt Damon, but "Plein soleil"/Purple Noon is far superior!

Another very good Highsmith thriller is "Enough Rope" aka "Le meurtrier". Also with Maurice Ronet from "Plein soleil", Marina Vlady and Gert Froebe (Goldfinger) who plays the baddie. An excellent film, but not even available on amazon dot fr. Fortunately I recorded it from German TV in German dubbing and transferred it later to DVD. But I would love to have it on a commercial DVD with the original French track and English subtitles!

I will start a threat on "Enough Rope", maybe some DVD label will discover it, get the rights and release it on DVD in the US? You never know.

I like the Talented Mr. Ripley, but the second half of the movie is just absolutely ridiculous. This film deals with that second half a lot better. It seems more plausible.
