Ruth is just too good.

She sort of irritates me. Ruth, played by Diane Varsi, is very sweet, but just too good to be true! I suppose that people would say that this character is a sensitive soul. There are people like that even in this world today. I can even admire those who truly care about other's welfare.
She goes even farther though. She tells Judd that he doesn't believe something when he does. She tells him he isn't a certain way when he is.
She tells her boyfriend that she knows how the Kesler family feels after having lost their son in such a horrible way !
I can't STAND people who who seem to think they know what people are thinking or how they are feeling or how they should be feeling!
Ruth was young. She certainly had a lot of growing up to do.
Any thoughts on this character?

They obviously feel totally gutted.

Ruth deftly played her cards and called Judd's bluff correctly in the woods, saving her life.

Women can be astute observers on how people (especially men) work.

Her character was the polar opposite "influencer" that Artie was on Judd.
