It's a loose biopic of Barbara Graham (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Graham). While the depiction of the gas chamber was accurate, the way she was apprehended by authorities is not. As far as her guilt goes, even Susan Hayward (who plays Graham) admitted that she believed Graham was guilty based on the evidence of her letters, etc.
I commend the film for inspiring viewers to look up the real-life case but, at the end of the day, it's basically a propaganda piece for the abolition of the death penalty. That's the point of the movie.
