How does this compare to the novel?

I read Hemingway's book a few years back and enjoyed it a lot. I have heard some extremely mixed reviews of the film version over the years, including warnings that the bullfighting scenes drag on for a fair time. The cast is certainly appealing -- although most of them are clearly much too old for the characters as portrayed by Hemingway -- but is it worth moving this up to the top of my lengthy watchlist?

It holds up. Maybe it doesn't get Hemingway's messages through very clearly, and the bullfighting scenes probably go on too long, but it holds your attention. It was particularly interesting to see Errol Flynn play a character who is basically himself. I almost thought he had written some of the dialogue.
