m. clift wasn't looking too good

he looks so much different in this movie than in much of his earlier work. was it because of that horrendous car crash? was it also a result of his heavy alcohol and drug addiction?

Look old man, why don't you make like a tree and get out!

It's a dirty job, but I pay clean money for it.

He was disfigured in the car crash.

Montgomery Clift filmed half of this movie before he had his car accident. After the accident the cameraman tried to film Monty from the right side as often as possible, since this was the least damaged side of his face. The car accident was probably not directly caused by Monty's heavy drinking and drug addictions because it is true that Monty was sober at the time of the accident.

reply

Elizabeth Taylor saved his life on the accident together with Rock Hudson.

reply

Elizabeth Taylor was responsible for removing two of Monty's teeth which were chocking him. Rock Hudson got Monty out of the car and sheilded him from photographers together with I think Kevin McCarthy and somebody else...

You can easily see the before and after scenes by looking at Monty's lips. In some scenes the bruising is very evident.

The other thing that I noticed was that Monty Clift looked so incredibly thin and willowy in this picture - almost emaciated.

am i just blind or something? i really didn't notice that big of a difference in monty's face during each scene in this movie. i watched the entire thing just to see changes in his face (if there were any) from scene to scene and i didn't notice huge differences. does anyone have pictures from different points in the film that show a clear difference in his face?

The majority of the interior scenes were shot @ MGM before the accident. Almost all exteriors were shot on location in Kentucky after the accident.

Some good examples:

Before:

-Scene w/ his parents where his Dad tells him he is related to Thomas Carlyle
-First time he meets Flash Perkins
-Photography scene (first time he meets Susanna)
-Drinking scene w/Flash Perkins
-The race
-Dances with Sister-in-law
-Tells his wife he wants the slaves freed after he reads Garwood's speech
-Sees baby for first time
-Scene after Lincoln's inauguration ("You look older John"}
-Tells Professor he is not running for office

After:

-First scene w/Nell
-When Professor tells his class the story of the Raintree
-All swamp scenes
-Gets Garwood dirty on the carriage
-Picnic with Susanna, Prof., and Mrs. Gray
-Professor gets on train
-On riverboat with Susannah
-Visits Susanna's burned down estate
-Most war scenes (though he has a false beard)
-Asylum scene

Because movies are filmed out of order it is impossible to see before and after as to which scene is the first one AFTER.

But I agree I watched it too and I can not tell much difference.
However in the MisFits in 1961 he looks puffy and older. of course he was older.

reply

Thanks for listing the before and after scenes. I think it's also noticeable in his voice. When he slurs that's all post operation. There are a few outdoor scenes that look pre-accident to me like when he kisses Nell for the first time.

The whole myth of Clift being "disfigured" is nonsense. From what people write you'd get the impression he was turned into the Elephant Man. The reality is he looked just fine in all his scenes in the whole movie, and in subsequent movies.

reply

He wasn't disfigured but he did look less attractive, maybe because his face looked more sunken in after and maybe also because he looked thinner and more haggard which was perhaps due to the pain.

>>> The other thing that I noticed was that Monty Clift looked so incredibly thin and willowy in this picture - almost emaciated

That's the exact same reaction I had to Monty when I saw The Young Lions, made not long after.

<< Elizabeth Taylor saved his life on the accident together with Rock Hudson. >>

Well she also kind of caused the accident by insisting he come to her house for dinner that night. He told her he was feeling tired and couldn't make it and she kept calling and calling and nagging him to come, until he agreed to go.

really?

reply

Yeah, let's blame her.
