Why the hell is this movie unknown?!!!

This is as good as Battleground or Objective, Burma!.

"I got the conch" - Lord of the Flies

Jack Palance might have won an Oscar for "City Slickers", but I wonder if I've ever seen him this good!

First saw this movie back in like 1962--on WOR ch 9 in New York--the tank running over Lt Costa's arm was the talk of my 2d grade class-- I taped it off TV in like 1986--but never saw a DVD of it--until today--in a Krogers Supermarket of all places, there it was----Robert Aldrich directed both "Attack" and "Kiss Me Deadly" within a year of each other--WOW--he's the man--funny how Eddie Albert just about made a career out of playing slimey guys--but yeah, in his mid 30's he was in the thick of WWII--plucking bodies out the Tarawa surf---Jack Palance should have been nominated for an Oscar for this film--he was way into it--pretty cool to see Strother Martin at the very beginning--one the the great War films.

That's funny, I remember seing it on WOR out of NYC too! One channel used to play the 4:30 movie and it was the "movie of the week" - same movie all week long at 4:30 pm. Attack was on all week and I think I saw it all 5 times. After that it was a middle of the night 2am. movie. Remember this was before the age of vcr's, so if you didn't sit up and watch it, you didn't catch it. Nice to own videos and dvd's now so anytime you want you can just run it.

hmm Saw this one too in NYC back in late 60s. Rem bringing it up a lot at
SUNY New Paltz in MFA class in early 70s. Teacher was hip guy from Pratt but
he's been in Korea so had mixed feelings about Attack, On one hand guy like
MASH film but less so about others. Had to push him on The Amerization of
Emily for some war satire. Helped that I'd lost my father in WW II or I'd
have been out on my butt. People are so touchy about some things.
Attack is killer good. Almost a horror film given that arm scene! Vivid.
Forgot Aldrich did the terrific Kiss Me Deadly. Man, could see that one
over and over. Thanks for pointing that out.
And weren't those some fun days when there were Late Late Late Night Movies.
Tho usually the third ones were pretty bad, lol. And a few of the seconds too.

Jack Palance could read the telephone book out loud and scare the Yell out of you. His soft voice always carried an undertone of menace about it, and when he got mad, head for the hills!

In the poker game scene with Albert, Marvin and Smithers, watch Palance's facial expressions. His cadaverous face ripples with malevolence and signals that he is just LOOKING to rip Albert's guts out.

Another good performance is in "Panic in the Streets", where he projects a sinister character so well it is almost physical. You DO NOT want to get on the wrong side of this guy.

I agree about an earlier post. the Title is misleading. Thank God there is netflix. out lee marvin appreciation I rented it and wasnt expecting such a good war drama.

First of all, I'm replying to a 14 year old post from IMDb. It almost gives me chills.

Jack Palance might have won an Oscar for "City Slickers", but I wonder if I've ever seen him this good!

Agree completely. He was so good in this and might I add I don't think he ever looked better except for maybe Shane.

This movie is impressive and not that well known which should change. Just look at that cast of actors!

reply

I agree with you, Goodfella. This movie is the equal of Paths of Glory with Kirk Douglas.

I think what is so unusual about Attack! is that it's a play adapted to film by Robert Aldrich. It really does look like a play that's taking place on a battlefield.

Jack Palance was great. The way his face is frozen in agony of death -- the film pulled no punches.

Maybe the problem lies with the title: "Attack". I've always felt it a little uninspired. Perhaps it's also a little misleading; somebody seeing the film may be expecting a gung-ho war film and judge it on that basis rather than as an intelligent character study.

reply

I agree that Jack Palance was great in it as was Eddie Albert. Mr. Palance should have got the oscar nomination but the winner should have been Kirk Douglas in Lust for Life in my opinion instead of Yul Brynner in The King and I. Yul was great in that movie but Douglas was magnificient.

Battleground is tremendous too. I immediately sought that movie out on DVD after watching Band Of Brothers Ardennes episodes. but back to Attack.

I only saw this once on TV about 20 years ago and have not seen it since but Jack Palance's performance is seared into my memory. I also rate this movie alongside Peckinpah's Cross Of Iron.

reply

I don't know Battleground or Objective, Burma!, but this is an overacted mess. It's unknown because it's not particularly good.

reply

It's an excellent movie and does deserve to be better known.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

Good question from 10 y. back....you see,in the early 50's everybody was enthusiastic with the victory over the axis, and technicolor war movies were at their best ("to hell and back", and alike). This was considered to be an excellent film, but not to most of the viewers.Cowardice vs. heroism as an element was not a stranger almost in all films but this one involved bad politics and the military. One can only be proud of the United States of America that did not censor anything unlike the French and "sounds of glory"...
