Oppressively bad

Wow. I found this awful. Not an authentic or organic note in it. Every inch felt written. Which can happen with adapted plays and doesn't have to be completely bad if the writing has something fresh to say - but this was just a stale, heavy-handed contrivance start-to-finish.

Terrible performances. Painful.

Based on the consensus rating I guess I'm in the minority. It's been a long time since I gave a 1 rating but I'm having a hard time coming up with a reason for anything else. I don't award points for unintentional comedy.

I liked part of this film, like the scenes of people having fun at the picnic, the picnic looked like a lot of fun.. and Rosalind Russell was good and there were a few other elements, but as a whole for me this movie fell flat.. A better Inge story is Splendor in the Grass which was wonderful.

While I didn't hate the film version of Picnic, I was disappointed. The theme of repression and how it affected the women in the play, I felt, didn't translate well in the film version. The ending, like the play's ending, felt too forced. I prefer the more realistic ending of Summer Brave, William Inge's revised play version of Picnic.

Susan Strasberg, I felt, was one of the only good things about this movie. I watched Picnic last night and I thought Strasberg was the standout in this film. Her performance felt so naturalistic, it felt like she wasn't even acting at times. If anyone hasn't watched it yet, please see her in Kapo. She gives a very moving performance in that.

Nonetheless, I gave this film (after a first viewing) a 6/10.

Mother, you have to laugh sometime, or people will think you're a lesbian.

I agree wholeheartedly. Millie is my favorite character. It is probably because of Susan Strasberg.
i just watched this afternoon. It is Labor Day. This is one film that I always watch..... a tradition.
It may not be a 10, but it's interesting to watch. Rosalind Russel gives an outstanding performance as well.

It's ok, with some really got parts like the picnic itself, but Holder's dialogue (the direction) seems too forced, making his character at times seem unbelievable. Rosalind Russell and Arthur O'Connell give best performances imo. Rating: 7/10.

Yes, this movie was an awful melodrama full with wooden performances and unrealistic dialogue.
