Rip-roaring 50's Western shot in the heart of Oregon with Kirk Douglas

This is similar to "The Last Frontier" (aka "Savage Wilderness"), released earlier the same month of December. They're both Fort & Indians Westerns taking place in the Northwest with Red Cloud & his braves as the antagonists. The assault on the fort in the movie recalls Red Cloud's real-life siege of Fort Phil Kearney in the shadow of the Big Horn Mountains in the Wyoming Territory where attacks were launched against troops & settlers for two years from 1866-1868.

One great thing about this Western is the character played by Kirk Douglas, Johnny Hawks. He's a robust individualist who refuses moronic sectarianism in the wilderness conflict. He sees beyond mere skin color & culture and focuses on character and mutual benefit while driven by self-interest, albeit not in an ignoble way. He's brave & confident, yes, but he's neither a blind hero nor a sullen antihero out for revenge; he's a nonconformist loner brimming with joie de vivre that doesn't care if people hate him (unjustly) and absolutely refuses social manipulations.

The exciting Oglala attack on the Fort is one of the highlights. It reveals the most practical way to assault a stronghold made of lumber in the wilds. Regrettably, the key Native characters are played by Caucasians, but there weren't many quality actors of AmerIndian descent back then. Thankfully, the peripheral Natives appear to be real AmerIndians. Basically, just pretend that Red Cloud, Grey Wolf and Onahti look more AmerIndian than they do. Problem solved.

The film runs 1 hour, 28 minutes, and was shot in the area of Bend, Oregon, including Smith Rock State Park and also the Deschutes National Forest.

This is indeed a fine example of the 1950s Cavalry & Indians Westerns. I've also noticed the similarity with "The Last Frontier". This one beats it, though, mainly due to Douglas vs. Mature in the hero role. The fort attack is one of the best such scenes ever.

Have you seen "Run of the Arrow" from 1957 with Rod Steiger? That one's a slightly different take on the Fort Phil Kearney story.

I've never seen "Run of the Arrow," but I've heard about it and have been keeping an eye out for it for years now on streaming.

I recommend it highly! I'm not the biggest Rod Steiger fan (Except in "Duck, You Sucker") but he makes a fine embittered ex-Confederate. Charles Bronson in an early role plays a Sioux warrior. Sarita Montiel is Steiger's love interest. Brian Keith and Ralph Meeker play cavalry officers. Jay C. Flippen plays a really good role as an Indian scout. He's not the stereotypical Indian scout at all.

The movie looks magnificent. Samuel Fuller was an excellent director of tough, uncompromising action movies.

It's on Youtube but you have to buy or rent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yZbKfcXWBs
There is also a website you can obtain it from for free, called RareLust, but of course, that would be illegal and wrong to do and I would never condone such behavior.

Thanks. I used to look down on 50's Westerns or older, but I've discovered several gems in recent years beyond the obvious greats (e.g. Shane and The Big Country), such as this one, The Last Frontier, Vera Cruz, Warpath, Johnny Guitar, Yellow Sky, The Tall T, Day of the Outlaw, Broken Arrow, The Law and Jake Wade, Whispering Smith, The Sundowners, Duel in the Sun, The Ride Back, The Last Wagon and Destry.

I grew up watching 50s Westerns on saturday afternoon TV. When I got into my teens I abandoned them for the grittier 60s and 70s westerns on VHS and the Late Movie. In recent years I have been revisiting the 50s westerns and checking out a lot I never saw before. I love the bright technicolor and epic vistas, and the guilt-free entertainment offered in these movies. I've seen most of the ones you mentioned. I haven't seen The Law and Jake Wade, Whispering Smith or Destry yet. I focus mainly on the Indian Wars movies. I LOVE Warpath! I cannot believe that the hero played Old Sykes in The Wild Bunch almost 20 years later. Broken Arrow is also a favorite. Debra Paget is my favorite 50s actress.

Also check out Tomahawk and Pillars of the Sky. Spectacular! Especially Pillars of the Sky. The Last Hunt with Debra Paget as another beauteous Indian girl is another great one.

I haven't seen those two so I'll put 'em on my watchlist.

I have fairly long posts on "The Law and Jake Wade" and "Destry" here at MovieChat, which might help you see if you'd be interested.
