Was this one of the first films shot on a remote location?

Through the 1940s, pretty much all Hollywood films were shot on soundstages or Griffith Park, or the Owens Valley a few hours away. It wasn't until the 1950s that film crews started actually photographing the places the stories were supposed to be, like the Rocky Mountains in "Shane" or Venice in "Summertime" or everywhere in "Around the World in 80 Days".

But I can't think of an earlier film that integrated stunning real places into the story.

Quite a few movies were filmed at locations far beyond southern or central California in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. I don't have much time right now, so I'll let you do your own research.
