Seriously this was entertainment in the 50's???

We saw this at a theater that shows double features and old movies they were showing two Marilyn Monroe movies this and Diamonds are a girls best friends, both movies were disgusting. How to marry...was about sluts only looking with a guy with money, not to mention dating married men. Actually both movies portrayed women as stupid, shallow, self-centered and only caring about a guys wallet. And these were two of Marilyn Monroes greatest films....wow that's really sad. So people went to the movies in the 50's and enjoyed seeing bad acting, and women with no morals.....guess the 50's isn't much different then today actually.

There wasn't much a woman could do to have a decent life at the time. Women's jobs paid very little because few opportunities existed for a single working woman besides office work, teacher, librarian, nurse or sales clerk.

Or, in these women's cases, fashion models.

I love the clothing which they modeled in that one scene!

remember that the film showed these women the error of their gold digging ways, and all 3 wound up marrying the men they loved, even though they werent rich..all 3 women were born during the depression and came of age during ww2,so looking to marry a man who could support and care for them was actually a very natural goal, just as many men looked to marry the sexiest or most beautiful woman regardless of her personality or character..the movie was neither sexist nor amoral, and as for not liking the acting, well,it had quite a cast of well respected stars

reply

Excellent point. You're right - they would have been born during or before the Depression, so most likely they would have been poor throughout their childhood and teenage years.

Its only comedy. I think people these days need to lighten up. When the other two were dreaming about jewels Loco was dreaming about Hamburger and beer  They all married guys they loved in the end. Only one had money. They were not terrible actresses. They had charm and charisma.

...and the one who had money kept it a secret until after he married his gal. She thought that she was marrying a poor man.

The movie is insulting if you take it out of the 1950s mindset where the only thing a woman could do was get married. Even women who had ambitions to be a teacher or secretary or nurse still had a dual goal of getting married.
Even at the end if it all Laurelai (Gentleman) and Schatze (Millionaire) made some good points about being golddiggers.

I don't think that this film had anything to do with women being pressured into marrying.

These women had a plan to marry for money. In other words, they were gold-diggers.

Gold-digging is something which has - and always will - exist.
