Jane's Hair and wardrobe as opposed to Marilyn's

Did anyone else notice in this movie that it was almost as if they intended to make sure Jane looked less beautiful than Marilyn? Jane is gorgeous in all of her movies that I've seen....but in this film they gave her dreadfully unflattering hairstyles and most of her clothes were also unflattering/just boring compared to Marilyn's. Marilyn on the other hand, had fabulous clothes and much better hairstyles. I don't know, personally it kind of annoyed me. Anyone else notice this?

F@#* Martha Stewart. Martha's polishing the brass on the Titanic, it's all going down.

I LOVED Jane's clothes, just as much as Marilyn's.. What outfit did you not like? I mean, her black cross fronted beaded evening gown with the blue fox stole, the one she wore to dinner on the ship, that was just gorgeous, and that other black strapless glittering gown with the pointed top... I mean, yes, she is wearing black, but I think she looked just as good if not better than Marilyn, and I loved her hair. I mean, when did she look bad? The only outfit I SORT of did not like was Jane's weird red coolie hat as she is getting on the boat, but it totally works for her character. I think the two stars looked great together and made eachother look really good...

i did think the first time i watched it, that they purposely did that to make more of monroe's beauty with the better outfits. jane's did look a little dowdy sometimes

Not so much dowdy as [comparatively] subdued; Dorothy, after all, was the "sensible" one, wanting love over money, whereas Loreli was casting out a broader net, hoping to find someone for Dorothy as well as ingratiate herself with anyone who was wealthy.

i agree their ALL nice clothes!! one style was just more conservative and classy, the other more glamorus and confident, both cool

Lorelei was preoccupied with luring men for her own advantage, while Dorothy just wanted to have fun. Obviously Lorelei was going to have put more time and effort into her appearance because of that.

I did, her clothes made her look very dowdy and big which didn't compliment her at all.

I noticed. I thought the outfit when they first boarded the cruise ship (with the big hat) was weird. Meanwhile Marilyn's outfit was all soft and feminine. So I kinda knew early on where they were going with this movie.

In spite of all of that, I think Jane still held her own against Marilyn. Mostly because she's like the only woman in the world who was not fazed by Marilyn at all.

I thought her black sequined dress with the black lace shawl was stunning. I would wear that in a heartbeat {someplace appropriate obviously}.

MaxwellXDemon, perhaps the 1950s styles Jane Russell wore in this film didn't appeal to your personal taste? The costumes worn by Marilyn Monroe may have been more attractive to you or you prefer them because she wore them. I'm guessing that you are a male and one who didn't live through the Fifties or the Sixties. The women are dressed appropriately for their age, colouring and individual styles.

The type of undergarments available at the time were limited compared to what's available today. Jane Russell had a lavish hourglass figure. Her style was informed by her proportions. Today she'd probably choose to wear Spanx and dress like Marilyn. Or not.
