Of course Mel Ferrar's character was gay!

In addition to being a "fey" artist, his line that he has to convince husbands that he's not interested in their wives AND the cruisy looks he gives Robert Ryan specifically at the last party scene and even has a drink already prepared to give him...he's a total Moe!

And the line about what he'd do with Mr. 'So and So' (I forget the character's name but he's the husband of the lady in the portrait) since his wife had left him...

‘Six inches is perfectly adequate; more is vulgar!' (Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Re: An open window).

Well.....one cannot blame Mel Ferrar for gazing at Robert Ryan. Mmmmmm...

reply

Yeesh, never mind *what* he said. The minute I saw his smile and heard his voice, I thought GAAAYYYY. Not that that's a bad thing.

Think cynical thoughts.

I didn't get a gay vibe off him at all, but he did have some of the best lines in the movie and was my favorite character.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

What I really want to know is if Mel Ferrer intentionally played that character gay since it was not only very obvious, but very daring for that time.

Revenge is a dish that best goes stale.

I hear you. I guess I took that line the wrong way, but he did show all the signs - as portrayed in that era's films.

reply

He was hilarious in this.
