A silly film

Totally implausible (gall bladder operation/self-hypnosis), but with a fine performance by Jose Ferrer and excellent cinematography.

silly is exactly how i would describe this movie, however it had Gene Tierney in it so it wasn't all bad 5/10

Tierney and Bickford were very good as well and Conte in his straight-forward, even somewhat wooden performance anchored the thing emotionally. It's got believable dialogue and characters up to a point, and Preminger's direction gives things a reasonable sense of gravity until the bottom falls out in the final lap. Up until then, it's a very watchable noir.

I agree that so much of this is silly. I saw this for the first time this morning on a movie channel. I'd never heard of it before. As silly as it was, I couldn't stop watching.
I agree that Ferrer was terrific. Conte was wooden. He's not one of my favorite actors to begin with.
I reminded myself that people didn't really know much about psychiatry at the time so it may have had audiences riveted in their seats. I couldn't help cringing now and then.

It may be silly, but I really enjoyed it
