Does this film hold up?

I'm exploring a lot of older/classic movies as I'm looking to expand my tastes in cinema, but over the course of this experiment, I find it's really a toss up on some of the greats on whether or not they hold up. I loved 12 Angry Men, but Casablanca made me fall asleep (I didn't outright hate it of course, but literally falling asleep doesn't rate well). Psycho left me wanting too and that's Hitchcock's best known work.

So does this film hold up well, or does the high score just reflect the score it deserved at the time it was made?

Hold up well . . . this is the kind of attitude that is wrong.

An analogy would be like putting your grandparent in a nursing home, because he is useless, and cannot do anything anymore.

It is totally UNFAIR to judge a movie based on YOUR tastes, doesn't matter if you don't like R&B music you can't give it a bad score because of your particular taste . . . . even nazis had a defense in the Nuremberg trial. . . so why judge a film based on our current entertainment.

does this film hold up well

Hold up well in comparison to what?? our current bluckbuster movies?
our current action flicks?
our current arthouse films?
Hold up well to 2015?

Why does this even matter?? so you don't fall asleep??

Instead of trying to adjust your enviroment to fit your agenda, adjust yourself to it, and TRY to understand the WHY of things.

I apologize beforehand for this semi rant, but I feel that of all people in this boards, YOU are definitely doing something GOOD, and I think you deserve this rant.

But first you must understand that to hate something, we must first try everything to love it, If after that you still hate it, then your hate would be undefeated by any argument, because you don't only know why you hate it, but you also know why your opponent loves it.

Psycho may be his most famous film, but the consensus (for what it's worth) is that Vertigo is his best film.

Yes it hold up really well. It was ahead of its time. This movie could be made today. Watch Rear Window, Dial M For Murder, North By Northwest, Strangers On A Train, Psycho, Rebecca, Shadow Of A Doubt (Hitchcock personal favorite) to start.
