Favorite Line

My favorite line in the film comes toward the beginning when when Stanwyck's editor comes to her small New York flat to tell her about Greenstreet's plan for her to invite Morgan to Christmas dinner at her "farm" to which Stanwyck replies "Farm? I haven't even got a windowbox!" I've seen the film many, many times, yet this line never fails to make me laugh. Anyone else have a favorite line?

reply

I love what stanwyck says when she and Morgan are bathing the baby.

Elizabeth and John are at the bistro talking about Elizabeth's problems as Felix leads them down the buffet table. Every time John offers his pearls of wisdom, Felix says:

Balony!
Horseradish!
Nuts!

Brother Maynard, bring forth the holy hand grenade!

reply

Towards the end when Morgan finds out she isn't married and he's not engaged and he goes in the room and kisses her, the part when she says "You're engaged!" He replies, "You're married!" and she responds, "That has nothing to do with it!" Everytime I laugh SO hard!

Another fav is after she gets the mink coat...The things a girl will do for a mink coat.

And Felix's: "Nobody needs a mink coat but the mink." and "Watch now. I show you how to flip-flop the flop-flips."

Stanwycks: "Everytime I'd opened my mouth he talked. I felt like Charlie McCarthy."

STanwyck: Oh, it's Yardley. He's sending me a sailor for Christmas.
Sloan: Oh, how nice... A sailor? Really, Elizabeth!

reply

When Yardley begs Elizabeth to flip a flapjack, she says, "Really Mr. Yardley, I'm not in the flipping mood."

You pretty much nailed the best lines in this timeless classic.

I also love the part where she suddenly realizes that the sailor will be expecting to see her baby and what are they going to do about no baby. Sloan says something about it not being a problem and starts leading her to the bedroom while she verbally and physically resists. It's not a line, but a very funny scene.

Looking forward to watching this in the next few days. Happy Christmas!

I like Dudley.

Felix: Merry Christmas
Dudley: Don't mention it.

Liz: You look frazzled. You want a drink?
Dudley: No. [As he pours himself a drink.] No, thanks. [He drinks it.]

And I love the conversation between him and John Sloan.

John [to Liz]: If there's anything I can do for you just say the word. You know how I feel.
Dudley: No. How do you feel? Tell us all about it. Say 'ah.'
John: Ah. Say, what is this?
Dudley: Why don't you go and build those rabbit hutches or whatever it is you build?
John: Multiple dwellings. And I don't build them. I'm an architect.
Dudley: Well go and be it, then. All you want to do is propose to Liz again and I can do it for you and get just as good a no for you.

I guess if I had to pick a favorite line it would be "well go and be it then."

Liz: Dud, we're going to be married.
Dudley: What? Hey, now look here, it isn't that bad.

Dudley: Say, that's right. You have got a farm, haven't you? Congratulate me. This is the happiest day of my life.
John: Aren't you getting a bit mixed? It's the happiest day of MY life.
Dudley: [Dismissively] Of course. Congratulations.
I think you've made a very wise decision. In fact, I think you two should get very married right away. And there we are. A husband, a farm in Connecticut, now all we need is a baby.

Mine is not a line, it's when Sydney Greenstreet does his trademark laugh at the end. There is something about his laugh that is so infectious.

reply

Mine is when Felix is asked if he is giving the bride away and he says "Always I give nuting away, always I keep my mouth shut."

reply

Felix at the buffet when he exclaims, "Horseradish!"

reply

My favorite line is really a tirade towards the end when Stanwyck goes off on Yardley telling him about all the things she is sick and tired of, ending it matter of factly by saying"In other words I'm tired." I always get a good laugh from it.

reply

That's my favorite line too! I was looking the exact line without listening and relistening to the movie lol but can't find it anywhere!

Butler: "Pardon me, Mrs. Lane. I'm planning on having a farm in Connecticut myself one day. I'd like some good bottomland. That's the best kind for farming, isn't it?"

Elizabeth: "Some people say yes and some people say no."

Butler: "But what do you say?"

Elizabeth: "I'm inclined to agree with them."

-------

When Jones and Elizabeth are bathing the baby.

Jones: "She (the baby) doesn't look like you. Does she look like your husband?"

Elizabth: "Good heavens, no."

All great lines, people !

Another one --- Felix to Norah --- "I don't like horses, and cows don't like me either !"

"J'ai l'oeil AMÉRICAIN !"

reply

When the nurse informs Felix that she will be marrying "Sinky," Felix comes back with, "Stinky ? Who is this Stinky ?"

"J'ai l'oeil AMÉRICAIN !"

reply

It's not really a laugh line, but I always get a chuckle out of Sinky explaining the finer points and inner workings of the "Old Magoo."

Especially where he further points out that it must be convincing and distinguishes that the Old Magoo is different from baloney!

Sinkewicz is not a huge part, but he's pretty funny. When Jefferson Jones asks Sinky what his nurse's name is, the way Sinky, stops, turns, gets a sly smile on his face and says, "Mary," is hilarious!

I happened to notice recently that he (Frank Jenks, actor playing Seaman Sinkewicz) was one of the amazing chorus of hard-bitten, harping magpie reporters in His Girl Friday.

"The baby is crying. Must be time for...something.."

I came here to write that, and you beat me to it. Mine too. I laughed out loud at that.
