Favorite Line

My favorite line in the film comes toward the beginning when when Stanwyck's editor comes to her small New York flat to tell her about Greenstreet's plan for her to invite Morgan to Christmas dinner at her "farm" to which Stanwyck replies "Farm? I haven't even got a windowbox!" I've seen the film many, many times, yet this line never fails to make me laugh. Anyone else have a favorite line?

Anything Felix says.

Brother Maynard, bring forth the holy hand grenade!

I love the interaction between Una O'Connor and S.Z. Sakall. It is a hilarious duel of the accents. When she calls him "Mr. Basilknocker" it never fails to bring a smile to my face!

I love the black waiter in Felix' restaurant who so intelligently fills Felix in on the meaning of the word 'catastrophe.' This is remarkable for an era in which African-Americans were usually portrayed unflatteringly.

reply

I know! I always feel like standing up and applauding whenever an African American is portrayed intelligently in a film of this era.

reply

I couldn't agree more! Even 50 years ago when I was a wee child, I cringed and squirmed at the way African Americans were portrayed in films and on TV. It's very refreshing to see African Americans portrayed intelligently in films 70 years ago.

everything is hunky-dunky

reply

I say "hunky-dunky" all the time. Someone challenged me on it last year (saying I must mean "hunky-dorey"). Apparently I'd seen this movie so many times that I thought "hunky-dunky" was standard parlance. I was so glad to see the movie last year and find the source ... and then share with the "challenger" the movie that I think everyone should watch every year. ... ... ... Sadly, I am having trouble finding it this year. I guess I must have missed it.

This film is now on my must see during the holidays list which includes, Miracle on 34th Street, It'a a Wonderful Life, March of the Wooden Soldiers and Auntie Mame. TCM showed it and I adore this film. It was so much ahead of it's time and I think with all the domestic divas and celebrity chefs popularity these days, this film is quite relavant.

I don't have a particualr favorite line but I find that everything Mr. Yardley says is hilarious. In my opinion he & Felix are the movie.

My favorite line is "csunja asony," spoken by S.Z. Sakall. He was Hungarian, and that is in Hungarian, which I speak. It's rare to hear Hungarian spoken in films correctly. One of the few exceptions is "The Usual Suspects."

What does "csunja asony" mean?

reply

Actually, to tell you the truth, it's "csunja bogar," which means something like "ugly bitch." He was referring to Una O'Connor.

My favorite line is when Ms. Lane (Barbara Stanwyck) and Mr. Jones (Dennis Morgan) are in the barn, and Jones spanks the behind of the cow, and says "Nice, firm rump!" and Ms. Lane turns around thinking he was talking about her! It's so funny to see Stanwyck's double take in that scene.

reply

My favorite line comes after Jones has had his milk mush in the hospital. He says "Everytime I yawn I'm scared I'll moo." Just love that...cracks me up everytime.

Yes. This would probably be my favorite too. The look on Stanwyck's face is priceless. I love that scene.

Poorly Lived and Poorly Died, Poorly Buried and No One Cried

Actually, "csunya bogar" means "ugly bug", not "ugly bitch". While Felix is certainly not being nice by calling the woman ugly, what he says is not at all vulgar. He's just expressing his dislike for the woman in a harmless and comical way befitting his character.

For so long I have been wanting to know what Felix is saying when he picks up the plate with the sardines on it. This happens the morning that he brings Elizabeth some breakfast. He says something like "schweit bitter." Do you have any idea what he is saying? He also says "peachy pachy" when Elizabeth tells him he didn't wear his coat outside when it was so cold. Thank you if you can help.

When Felix picks up the plate of sardines and sniffs it, he speaks Hungarian and says, "Phew, that stinks!"
As for "peachy pachy", that doesn't mean anything in Hungarian - could be a Felix-ism? :)

Sorry for the 6 year delay !!

What Felix says is "Pishy poshy" --- his way of saying "Pish, posh," AKA "Tut, tut" / "Baloney !" / "Bah !" / "Go on !" / "Pshaw" / "Not a problem !" / "I've got this covered" / etc.

Enjoy !

I just love it when Dennis Morgan replies to Stanwyck's question as to whether he dances. He replies "Oh, I get around." and he has that sweet little smile on his face.

I love what Stanwyck says to ole what's his face uhh... Mr. Sloan I guess, after he kisses her and starts to talk about pipes in his house. The whole conversation completely sums up their relationship; it goes something like this:

Stanwyck: John, when you're kissing me, don't talk about plumbing.
Sloan: What? Oh, I'm sorry, what should I talk about?
Stanwyck: Well, do you have to talk?

"He's three years old, gentle as a kitten, and likes dogs." - "I wonder whether Mark means that he eats dogs or is fond of them?"

reply

My husband laughs each time at the scene when the baby supposedly swallows the watch. Sloan says he'll call the doctor, and Uncle Felix says to call the police too...it was a gold watch.

Mine is when Yardley/ Greenstreet first arrives at the farm. Sakaly is bringing a pair of Manhattens to the Judge, he says hello to Yardley who takes one of the cocktails instead of shaking his hand. When he turns to leave Sakaly mutters under his breath "fatman" a reference to Greenstreet in the Maltese Falcon.
