Casting The Remake

How would you cast the remake of LAURA?

I see it like this . . .

ANNE HATHAWAY . . . Laura Hunt

STANLEY TUCCI . . . Waldo Leidecker

MERYL STREEP . . . Anne Treadwell

JAMES MCAVOY . . . Shelby Carpenter

JOSH HARTNETT . . . Mark MacPherson

Here is how I would pick the cast if there was remake.

Jon Hamm as Mark MacPherson

Anne Hathaway as Laura Hunt

Jeremy Irons as Waldo Lydecker

Helen Hunt as Anne Treadwell

Michael Fassbender as Shelby Carpenter

reply

You really nailed it! Jon Hamm and Jeremy Irons, what totally perfect choices for those two men!

reply

Definitely Brad Pitt as Shelby Carpenter. Pitt was born to play the part of "a male beauty in distress".

"The night was sultry."

The film was remade in 2006 as "Deja Vu" starring Denzel Washington, Val Kilmer, Paula Patton and Jim Caviezel.

How do you like that piece of satire?

reply

If there was an African-American Remake here would be a cast:

Laura Hunt-Nicole Beharie, Tika Sumpter or Denise Boutte

Mark Macpherson-Michael Ealy,Idris Elba,Omari Hardwick or Chiwetel Ejiofor

Anne Treadwell-Angela Bassett, Lynn Whitfield or Phylica Rashad

Waldo Lydecker-Forrest Whitaker, Terrance Howard, Anthony Anderson (although he's a comedian, he's really good in dramatic roles) or Geoffrey Wright (actually, I think he would be best for this role), Giancarlo Esposito

Shelby Carpenter-Boris Kodjoe, Christian Keyes, Brian White or Datari Turner

reply

Just the thought of a remake makes me puke, but I'd LOVE to see Forrest Whitaker as Waldo. He does quirky and eccentric really well. And Edris Elba as Macpherson would be excellent, too. The more I think about it, a A-A version could really be cool. Angela Basset as Anne Treadwall...WOW!

reply

How could you leave out Morris Chestnut as a choice for Macpherson?

reply

Josh Harnett? Dude-hes not a star anymore-was barely one for a few years over ten years ago. If youre gonna do an imaginary cast, at least pick a realistic one!

and while we're remaking this movie, why don't we just repaint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel with a "better" version of that?

There was a television remake of Laura in 1968, starring of all people, Lee Radziwill, Jackie Kennedy's younger sister. The casting people really nailed the remaining cast.

reply

Just looked at that cast and you are absolutely right. Farley Granger? Perfect for Shelby Carpenter. Arlene Francis, George Sanders, Robert Stack. Written by Capote. Directed by David Susskind.

Well, I won't be happy until I see that version!!!

What's the big deal about a remake? Yes, some remakes/reboots/etc. end up WORSE than the original, but that doesn't mean that all of them are bad and it also doesn't mean it will tarnish the original. I think sometimes they end up good. (can't name any of them off the top of my head. Can someone list some examples of reboots/remakes/etc. work being on par or better than the original, whichever medium?)

Also, if it does do good, it opens up the new generation, to the original. I wouldn't have even heard of Laura if I didn't hear it was being remade. So, the fact that it is even being remade helped me find out about the original, and I want to see the original now before the new version is released.

In a way, it provides promotion, media exposure, and publicity for the original, whether it turns out good or bad, it helps people who haven't heard of it get exposed to it/find out about it, etc. create an interest in the public for the original.

I want to comment more but I'm tired. Anyway, that's just my opinion on why it can/should be okay to remake, reboot, re-imagine, etc., a work of art.

If you love Jesus, & are proud of it, copy this & make it your signature. I saw this & I did.

Laura. . . Heather Graham
Mark. . . Adam Sandler
Waldo. . . Woody Allen
Shelby. . .?

Seriously, Jon Hamm? No way. Though I'm a big fan of the show, Hamm has ONE affect, nor can he emote the controlled rage and masculinity of Dana Andrews. I'm not sure I can name an actor who could convincingly play the part as most stars today are effeminate. Ben Affleck? Johnny Depp? Please.

MacPherson.... 20 years ago, I would have instantly said Kyle McLachlan. But now, I'll second what someone else said- Brad Pitt.

Laura... Amy Adams.

Lydecker... Liam Neeson.

Anne Treadwell... Kim Basinger.

Carpenter... James Marsden.

Laura - it has to be a great beauty like Keira Knightly or Jessica Brown Findlay (a young Angelina Jolie would have worked)

Mark McPherson - Tom Cruise

Shelby Carpenter - James Norton

Waldo Lydecker - boy, there aren't any Clifton Webb types any more. Philip Seymour Hoffman could have pulled it off. Colin Firth?

Anne Tredwell - Streep

The original is perfect and is still available for viewing. There is no need for a remake.
