A Remake?

I really enjoy this movie and I think it would make a great remake with changing it due to time. I think the movie could work really well! My question is who do you want to play the parts?

I seem to remember a TV remake with Bob Crane as the lead (I think it was in the 1970s.)

I think it's the black & white angle that makes a lot of people bring up remakes. They just can't get past the fact that a movie is NOT IN COLOR!! (Gasp!)Pity them, for they are shortsighted and limited folks.

Also, a good argument against remakes is not just that are no leads comparable to the Cary Grants, etc. of the golden age; it's the lack of career character actors. Capra especially was a master of using these accomplished "bit" players in his films. The cast lists are loaded with them: Jack Carson, Walter Brennan, James Gleason, Beulah Bondi, Anne Revere, Cecil Kellaway, Charles Lane--I could go on and on. These masters of their craft could take a part that involved little more than a few lines, and make an indelible mark on a movie. The folks showed more professionalism and talent in their small parts than today's "stars" exhibit in their entire careers, with few exceptions. They were versatile, polished, and totally captivating performers.

I have just finished watching this for the first time and can't help but think that the this would be the perfect project for the Coen Brothers. They wouldn't even have to deviate too far with the direction, as it plays fairly well with their more frantic comedies (Raising Arizona comes to mind). Even their casting wouldn't have to be too far outside the box:

Mortimer: George Clooney (an obvious choice as Clooney seems to have been channeling Cary Grant for all of the Coen movies he has appeared in)

Jonathan: John Turturro

Dr. Einstein: Steve Buscemi

Teddy: John Goodman

Elaine: Holly Hunter

Police Sgt. Brophy: J.K. Simmons

I wouldn't remake the movie--it's too perfect. But if I were going to cast this for Broadway (it was originally a B'way play), then:

David Hyde Pierce or Matthew Broderick for Mortimer.

Doris Roberts, Marion Ross, Georgia Engel, Piper Laurie or Betty White for the aunts

I love Jeremy Irons as Jonathan. I had also considered Brad Garrett from Everybody Loves Raymond, since I saw him on B'way in The Odd Couple and he really held his own against Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. He also could be one of the cops, since he did such a good job as Murray the cop. You have to coordinate the coloring of Jonathan and Mortimer so it looks as if they could be related.

I'd love to see John Lithgow or Tim Curry as Teddy: they both play crazy awfully well. And Robert Downey Jr would certainly be a great Teddy.

For the truly thankless role of Eileen--Jennifer Garner? Cameron Diaz? You need someone sweet and unquestioning. Janel Malowney from West Wing could do it, as could NiCole Robinson --she played Leo's assistant Margaret.

As Dr Einstein, Clive Resnick --he's not tall and can do ANY accent.

As Officer O'Hara--Malcolm Getz or Jason Gray-Stanford (from Monk). He could also be Officer Klein.

Victor Garber as Mr Witherspoon. Actually Victor Garber could be anyone.

Ted Levine from Monk as Lt. Rooney, or John Mahoney.

Officer Brophy--Richard Karn.

Somebody raise the money to put this on, I'm calling the actors--right after I go dig a new lock in the Panama Canal.
