Watched this last night on TCM

It was the first time I've been able to watch the entire movie, instead of just catching bits and pieces of it as I've done over the years. I think this is my second favorite Joan Crawford role, my first being Mildred Pierce. She's very believable in this part. It has an excellent supporting cast, with Melvyn Douglass and Conrad Veidt. The plot is good. The little boy in the film is adorable! I'm rating it 7.5/10.

I thought she was very (unexpectedly) good in the first half. But once the transformation takes place, the film becomes like a million other routine stories, and the character much less interesting....both to watch, and to play.

SPOILER AHEAD!!

True, but what about her scene in the lift where she's deciding whether or not to kill the boy? I thought she did a good job of it there. I like that even after her transformation she's still has some larceny in her heart.

To tell the truth, my mind always wanders in the second half, and I don't remember that scene. If it were really spectacular, though, I imagine it would be a famous clip (?)

Hmm, I have no idea if it's famous. I don't think so. It's well edited though. She's just met with Conrad Veidt and he's putting pressure on her to go through with the plan. Joan Crawford and the child board the lift. It's super dangerous but she lets the boy horse around on it, maybe hoping he'll "accidentally" fall. Then she sits next to him and plays with the lock. They cut to her face-solemn, no expression. Then to the waterfall beneath. Then to her hand. It was good.
