Did it? Seems to me it would have been a monster hit being in color and a musical.
It wasn’t the biggest flop of all time. I just read online that it wasn’t breaking box office records like most other classics.

Curiosity got me so I checked. It was a flop as far as not meeting it's (for the time) record budget, but it did well at the box office and got critical acclaim and Academy Award nominations and wins.
