Dwight Frye's best performance?

I think it is... on screen!

A toss-up between Renfield and Fritz and Hermann!!!

I agree - I think Herman is probably his best performance.

Although as you point out his performances in Dracula and Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein are awesome too.

Dwight Frye is one of the great unsung horror actors - a bit like the Brad Dourif of his day. I find Frye's performances always very watchable.

Dan,

"the Brad Dourif of his day"

Well said.

His acting was OK here, but the Herman dialog was so bad that it was hard to take him seriously.

I agree with the first poster -- three-way tie: Renfield, Fritz and Herman. If I absolutely had to rank them, I'd say: 1) Renfield; 2) Fritz: 3) Herman. Herman's best line: "No, no, no! Bats no do! They soft, like cat. They not bite Herman!" Great stuff. Dwight Frye was a fantastic actor. Too bad he died so young.

Anyone else find it disturbing that the mentally challenged Hermann looks so out-of-place with the rest of the townspeople, but with his stubble and greasy-looking hair over his eyes, he looks like he'd fit right in with today's society?

I like Dwight Frye as Fritz best of all. He is so good visually in 'Frankenstein.' He was suitably manic as Renfield. But his Herman character is spoilt by the simple idiot child speech. And visually he is just a little OTT in 'The Vampire Bat.'

Renfield.

Nah, I always felt his best performance was as Rudi in Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man. What a creepy villager he played in that one
