One of the most politically audacious lines of the pre-60s era

"While you're out there risking life and limb...we'll be in here thinking what a sucker you are."

Snuck in under the wire, that is, just a year before the Hays Code started getting enforced.

Why would that line be a problem?

I'm just a patsy!

Are you joking? I'll tell you what. . . You say this line to a soldier to his face. Okay?

reply

Pretty sure there are all kinds of lines in movies that a person wouldn't say to another person's face in real life... Still waiting on a valid answer to this one. ---It wants no straps. - Karlhttp://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000024/nest/158601447

So what? The line is no big deal.

reply

Not really. The US was isolationist prior to both world wars. They had no interest in world policing. The cult of the US military being perceived as some path to the patriotic ideal was not as widespread then. People did think that those joining an army which will wind up fighting other country's wars were suckers.
