i cant believe it was banned

that must have been really insulting to the "freaks" in this movie. like they're so horrible to look at that their movie gets banned.

Yes, I know we're a lot more open-minded nowadays, but you'd think even then people would've gotten the message of the film which was that despite our differences we are all human and deserve to be treated as such. I can't see how that could possibly be offensive then, now, or any time. It sounds like all they got out of the film is "those disgusting weirdos repulse me" which is sad.

I wonder if the ban was prompted by reasons other than featuring deformed and mentally handicapped people centre stage? The Freaks adhere to a challenging morality or ethic, probably out of necessity, which causes them to take the law into their own hands when one or all are offended, wreak a horrible revenge and appear to be able to get away with it. Even now this is quite subversive and showing a community somewhat outside of society possessing a measure of power could have as posing a potential threat against the mainstream.
My other suggestion is that Freaks would almost certainly have been misunderstood by a sizeable moral majority. As a "horror" movie it may have garnered a reputation as a work of exploitation and a particularly tasteless one. And as we know only too well some films are quickly labelled and dismissed by those in authority who don't even bother to watch the works themselves.

I would expect that the reason for it being banned was what happened to Cleopatra at the end. I would imagine that people back then could not stand seeing a beautiful woman made into that by the freaks. They probably would have found that insulting and threatening. They possibly would not quite be able to understand why Cleopatra might have deserved that, possibly thinking that there was not really anything wrong with what Cleopatra was doing, because it was the freaks fault for being so weird.

That's my thoughts based on how differently people might have thought about people with deformities and disabilities back then.

The reason it was banned was because the film board believed it exploited the cast.

I personally am grossed with the movie, despite having been made 8 decades ago. Exploitative toward those people. Freaks? Physical or moral regardless. Either way, it's sad that someone made the movie like this. And it's not really a horror flick, but rather the camp - in the vein of Batman&Robin 1932. I don't see what attracted people to this film nowadays.

I don't think it's exploitative at all. I think Cleopatra and Hercules were definitely made out to be the villains whereas the "freaks" were the heroes. I thought this movie did a wonderful job at putting them in a positive light. The message I got is that despite our differences we're all humans who want and deserve love and compassion. The "normal" people who wanted to exploit the freaks and saw them as nothing more than jokes or toys to be played with were portrayed as awful human beings and so in the end they got what they deserved. I loved when Cleopatra became one of the things she gawked at and laughed all that time so she could see how it felt.

Overall I think this is a beautiful film even if it does get misunderstood at times.

People are also missing the part at the end where Hans is guilt-ridden because of the violent revenge exacted on Cleopatra by the others. He has to be coaxed by Frida to return with her after running away from the circus for several years. Frida says "you only wanted Cleopatra to give up the poison".

It wouldn't be made today either. Social justice warriors word complain that it was ablist and exploitative.

It was made today though. Or loosely remade. Watch American Horror Story: Freak Show. It's season 4 of AHS.

It's very similar in theme to Edgar Allan Poe's short story "Hop Frog". The little people commit a revenge murder after being insulted by big people and get away with it there too.
