favorite bit

what is your favorite part of the movie?
mine is when all four of them are hiding in barrels at the beginning.

I guess that my favorite scene would be in the barber shop, where Chico and Harpo are snipping ("snooping") away at the moustache of the sleeping patron.

Mine is any one featuring Groucho on the ship.

Today is the greatest day I've ever known

The Chevalier bit is hilarious. It's also on Youtube!

Great stuff

I love the part where Groucho goes into the cowboy accent with the host at the party, ending with fake sound effects of saddling "Bessie" offscreen. Anybody have a transcript of that dialogue? Some of the words were garbled there, but his delivery and walk were priceless.

Groucho talking romantically to Thelma Todd while pretending to be a divorce lawyer : "By the time we're through, you'll have perfect grounds for divorce, and so will my wife."

There's lots of priceless moments in this film, I particularly like the Chevalier sequence, the end scene at the old barn where Groucho is commentating on the fight, and Chico's piano solo at the Fancy Dress Party!

The barbershop scene is easily my favourite. Followed by the scene with the guys playing chess - Harpo's face whenever the guy goes to make a move is hilarious.

Also the scene in Thelma Todd's room when Groucho says: "And with that Sir, I bid you a fond farewell! Good day Sir", then does his funny walk.

"I'll take you out for a meal with Mr and Mrs Pain. Order up some violent quiche."

I agree about the bit where they pick up the instruments. Think about it: they're illegal stowaways, they're being chased by the ship's men - the last thing they should do is draw any attention to themselves. The instruments moment is straight out of Python, but at least thirty years early.

I can't choose! I love all the parts where Groucho is throwing out one-liners to whoever is there.
Probably if I had to chose, I'd say the part where he's hiding in the closet:

"What are you doing in there?"
"Nothing. Come on in..."

------------------------------------------
"I have something to say, and I'm gonna say it to you, and you, and you and your hump!"

The Marx Brothers are insane lol!

I like when Groucho delivers the innuendo line:

"That's what I always say: love flies out the door when money comes innuendo."

"Now what kind of man are YOU dude?"

reply

Groucho's cowboy routine near the end. And my favorite Groucho line (possibly) of all time --- "Are these your gloves? I found them in your trunk." Don't know why, but there's something about that line that kills me every time.

When Groucho is hitting on a party patron's wife. The guy comes over dressed as an American Indian and says; "I don't like what's going on here." And Groucho replies: "Then why don't you go back where you came from."

Paraphrasing.

"That's what a gym teacher once told me."

"Put your scalp in your pocket!"

black and white movies were better

Harpo's fascination with the chess players and his attempt to mimic them without understanding the purpose.

If I could drop dead right now, I'd be the happiest man alive.
