The part of Rachel Nichols-Maria Taylor ESPN feud that’s angering Adam Silver

Commissioner Adam Silver showed support for ESPN’s NBA personality Rachel Nichols in her feud with colleague Maria Taylor, saying the whole episode is “disheartening’’ and appearing angry the issue has festered this long.

ESPN banned Nichols from doing sideline coverage of the NBA Finals as a result of a secret tape recording one year ago in which she stated that Taylor’s promotion to the “NBA Countdown” shows was likely based on race. Taylor is black. Nichols, who is white, is still doing her regular NBA show, “The Jump,’’ though Tuesday’s edition, which aired hours before Game 1, was cancelled.

Nichols was heard on the tape talking to Adam Mendelsohn, a LeBron James confidant, after Taylor instead was picked to host the 2020 NBA Finals.

“I wish Maria Taylor all the success in the world — she covers football, she covers basketball,'” Nichols said. “If you need to give her more things to do because you are feeling pressure about your crappy longtime record on diversity — which, by the way, I know personally from the female side of it — like, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it from me or taking my thing.’’
