It's tragic that his son was murdered but he comes off as the biggest tool on his own show.

I'm sure he is a good enough person, with the kidnapping and murder of his young son, giving him a cause to pursue wrongdoers, but that loss also created an overprotective father per his daughter.
There are a few interviews with her talking about her struggles living with her father (John Walsh)... If her claims are true, it's quite scary and sad.
